The History Channel Kicks Ass Lately

50% off Bruce Lee: The Dragon of Martial Arts DVD Set at THE BIOGRAPHY SHOP! Was $79.85.

They’ve been showing a some good martial arts shows lately. I’m sure most people have seen the first episode of “Human Weapon” where two dudes travel across the world learning various martial arts, and at the end of each episode one of the guys fights someone. The first episode was in Thailand, and of course the dudes were studying different Muay Thai styles. It was a pretty good show, but they should’ve showed more of the fight at the end, instead they chose to edit some of it and show other parts in slow motion. Neither guy really seemed to hurt the other one, but the local Muay Thai champ won a decision.

Also last night on “Cities Of The Underworld” on The History Channel, the show was about Portland, Oregon’s shady history and some of the underground (literally) rooms where various illegal activities took place in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. One of the last segments of the episode was about an illegal “fight club” which depending on who was talking, was mostly referred to as “bareknuckle boxing” but the host of the show kept calling “Mysterious” Billy Smith an “Ultimate Fighter.”

No doubt, Mysterious Billy Smith sounds like a badass. He’s known as the “Dirtiest fighter of all time”. Supposedly, he was biting dudes ears off long before Mike Tyson was even born.

Report: Pro Elite invests in Cage Rage

The Fight Network is reporting that Pro Elite (parent company of EliteXC) has acquired a significant ownership stake in UK-based MMA fight promotion Cage Rage.

According to the report, Pro Elite has bought out majority shareholder John Faraday’s stake in the promotion. Cage Rage promoter Andy Greer confirmed that Pro Elite is on board and “investing heavily in different areas.”

EliteXC President of Live Events Gary Shaw would not comment, citing the fact that Pro Elite is a publicly traded company being the primary reason. Shaw made no mention of anything to do with Cage Rage during a conference call held earlier this afternoon to promote Friday’s debut of ShoXC.

Thanks to Brent Colflesh for the heads up.

Conference call notes for debut of ShoXC

Pro Elite and Showtime conducted a conference call this afternoon in order to promote the launch of ShoXC this Friday night at 11 p.m. ET from the Chumash Casino in Santa Ynez, Calif. The main event will be a clash of 155 lbs. fighters Edson Berto and K.J. Noons.

EliteXC Live Events President Gary Shaw, Pro Elite CEO Doug DeLuca, and Showtime’s Senior V.P. of Sports Programming Ken Hershman were all on the call.

Here are some of the most notable developments:

- There will be a total of four ShoXC telecasts this year, including Friday’s show. The next one after Friday is slated to take place in the middle or end of August with the two other shows tentatively planned for October and December.

- The first ShoXC had been planned for December but Showtime is so excited about MMA right now that they asked for the debut show to be moved up.

- The next full-scale EliteXC show is scheduled for September 15 in Honolulu, Hawaii. It will be televised on Showtime. The main event being discussed right now is Murilo “Ninja” Rua taking on Robbie Lawler. However, Shaw made it clear at several points during the call that bout agreements have not been signed. Rua is EliteXC’s middleweight champion while Lawler is Icon Sport’s middleweight title holder. However, only Rua’s title was mentioned as being at stake.

- The rumors of EliteXC possibly buying King of the Cage, Gladiator Challenge, and Icon Sport were brought up. Shaw said he couldn’t comment on possible acquisitions because they are a public traded company. There was no flat denial when the question was asked. A reporter also tried to re-phrase the question in a creative fashion by asking what promotions EliteXC was interested in working with. The name of GC, KOTC, and Icon were all brought up by Shaw as companies EliteXC has an interest in working with.

My personal take is that there appears to be a lot of fire to the smoke when it comes to the rumors but I don’t have any hard evidence to support my claim.

- The Internet telecast will take place on ProElite.com but the matches won’t be held until after the Showtime show. If you’re on the West Coast or are an MMA junkie, you’ll be able to watch some early morning MMA.

- Nick Diaz is also being talked about as fighting on the September 15 card.

- In regard to Thierry Sokoudjou, Shaw said they thought they were close to a deal that Jeremy Lappen help put together. They flew Sokoudjou out for the 6/20 show and wined him and dined him. When Sokoudjou returned home he received an offer from another promotion that Shaw wasn’t willing to match. He said any deal with Sokoudjou is “off the table.”

- Shaw talked about his concerns with extreme weight cutting in MMA and hasn’t ruled out the introduction of new weight classes. He said one class they are considering is a 160 lbs. class. I think that would be perfect for Diaz.

- I asked Shaw if there was any interest from EliteXC in Frank Trigg and he said they were indeed interested.

- There are two more shows with Frank Shamrock and Strikeforce left as a part of the agreed upon settlement that allowed EliteXC to keep Shamrock on the card of their debut telecast on Feb. 10.

- Steroids were brought up. Shaw said he is concerned and spoke out against the use of performance enhancers in MMA but said he doesn’t plan to test steroids. He then said fighter safe is a concern and wouldn’t rule out the possibility of implementing testing in the future.

- When the IFL deciding to test its own fighters in ‘08, Shaw sort of took what I considered to be a veiled shot. He said he wants to see how they react when a major star of theirs tests positive — if they ever get a star. Ouch. I’m not sure if Shaw meant that as an insult or if it just came out funny. It sure sounded like a shot to me. If he meant it, he should watch their program because they’ve got a lot of good young fighters on their roster now. I guess he hasn’t seen Chris Horodecki because Shaw would love to have that kid fighting for him if he saw him.

UFC All Access: Randy Couture to be featured on Spike special

UFC All Access featuring Randy CoutureReigning UFC Heavyweight Champion Randy Couture will be featured on the next edition of “UFC All Access” on the Spike television network, according to FightNetwork.com.

No broadcast date or time has been announced at this time, but these specials often air during the week before pay-per-view (PPV) events. Therefore, since Couture faces Gabriel Gonzaga at UFC 75: “Respect” on August 25, expect to see this debut sometime during the week of August 20.

Naturally, we’ll let you know when a date and time are announced.

For some reason this latest news made me think of an CBSSportsline.com article that I read about one month ago.

It was actually an interview with Bas Rutten, who co-owns Legends Gym in Los Angeles, Calif., with “The Natural.”

Bas shared the following concerns:

“Randy is a good friend of mine, and like I always say, Randy is Randy. He always comes out and surprises people. Gonzaga is doing really good. He came out of nowhere, pretty much. And the way he shut down Mirko Cro Cop with a really smart game plan shows that he’s got a really good group behind him that set him up with that game plan. It’s the same as like with (Fedor) Emelianenko. They’ve got great game plans, those guys, and you see that it pays off. Gonzaga needs to end up on top but it’s going to be very difficult to get Randy on his back, and once that he’s on his back, he’ll get up. I think that age could be a factor. I know that Randy’s life is upside down. He’s on a movie set right now, and there’s a lot of stuff that Randy’s doing and I hope that it doesn’t affect him.”

I’m not sure if the presense of Rachelle Leah will have any impact on Couture whatsoever. But, it is yet another committment for Randy prior to his showdown with Napao.

And he seems to have a lot of committments these days … enough for his close friend and business partner to mention it.

Just something to consider on a rather slow (thus far) UFC news day.

Time to diss in ____ fans: Joe “Diesel” Riggs

NOTE: I realize that Joe Riggs has only one fan, Dana White, but this is a HYPOTHETICAL conversation so bear with me.

UFC Fight (me): Dammit, Joe Riggs will be back in the UFC.

Joe Riggs Fan: Yeah, he did his patented ground-and-pound and then finished him with a submission. He really showed how dominant he can be; that Chambers guy was tough, but way out of his league.

Me: What league? Pee Wee? How can it be a "patented ground-and-pound" when he's never done it before to anybody with talent?

Riggs Fan: Dude, Joe Riggs has a lot of potential.

Me: Potential to lose. The only decent fighter he beat in the UFC was Nick Diaz, and regardless of his win over Gomi, Diaz has and can be beaten by anyone with above-average talent. Joe Riggs is the most overrated fighter I've seen in a long time. The dude doesn't win and yet, we constantly hear how tough he is and see him on the TV over guys like Nate Marquardt. Potential is for guys that haven't been tested, Riggs has been tested.

Riggs Fan: How do you explain his domination of Jason Von Flue then?

Me: ...with his domination Mike Swick, Deigo Sanchez, Matt Hughes and Ivan Salivarry. He's a decent fighter, but he doesn't belong in the UFC. Besides, Von Flue has been dominated by future Hall of Famers Luke Cummo and Luke Stewart, he's not exactly a stud.

Riggs Fan: ...BUT HE USED TO WEIGH 300lbs!

Me: Thanks Goldberg and, yes, Slimfast is a wonderful diet, but other than a marketing ploy, what does that mean exactly? He hits like a 300lber? Who has he KO'd on the big stage? No one.

Riggs Fan: You are so right. I have now seen the light.

Me: I do what I can; can what I do.

Riggs fan: Did I mention that you are so handsome it's a sin?

Me: Yes, I know. Now tell you mom I said hi and I'll be by after you go to bed.

----It's my website, I can end my Hypothetical argument anyway I want. You no like? Let me have it in the comments section. I like the heat! Seriously, I enjoy arguing.
