UFC 77: Jorge Gurgel vs. Doug Evans

jorgegurgel.jpg
Jorge Gurgel (11-2) will return to action before a hometown crowd at UFC 77 in Cincinnati, Ohio, against Doug Evans (5-1), according to a recent MySpace bulletin from the former The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) contestant.

Here’s the snip:

“To all my fans I would like to announce that I will be fighting Doug Evans at the UFC in Cincinnati on October the 20th. Its a great honor to finally be able to perform in front of my home crowd, students and family. I would like to thank everyone in advance for all the support over the years. I will do my best.”

Gurgel is coming off of a brutal unanimous decision win over Diego Saraiva at UFC 73 last month. During the lightweight war, Gurgel pretty much had his face broken (jaw, facial). He’s apparently well enough to be ready for the October 20 show.

Evans dropped his first and only fight inside the Octagon to the talented Roger Huerta at the TUF 5 Finale in June. And up until he succumbed to a technical knockout (strikes) in round two, he was giving Huerta all he could handle.

Gurgel will join his training partner from the Jorge Gurgel Mixed Martial Arts Academy, Rich Franklin, on the card. “Ace” will look to reclaim his 185-pound belt from the man who defeated him for it at UFC 64, Anderson Silva, almost a year to the day when the two last met.

Why Josh Koscheck will beat Georges St. Pierre

The headline says it all.

I am picking Josh Koscheck to defeat Georges St. Pierre via second round TKO (ground and pound) at UFC 74.

There, I said it!

I want to clarify before I go into my dissertation that I’m not a pro-Koscheck guy or an anti-St. Pierre guy, I’m just giving my unbiased opinion.

Take it or leave it.

But wait a minute, how unbiased am I?

For a long time I was a huge GSP fan. No, strike that, I was a MARK for GSP. However, my enthusiasm has waned somewhat out of fear that he could be the Fredo Corleone of the UFC’s welterweight division.

Prior to UFC 69, UFC president Dana White went into Don West-mode (pre-TNA wrestling) and gave us the hard sell on GSP, proclaiming him one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world. I bought into it, and I know a lot of you did as well.

What happened in the months after UFC 69? White went from calling him one of the best in the world to publicly question his character! Dana didn’t hesitate to throw GSP under the bus, questioning his mental toughness while praising his athletic abilities.

Apparently GSP didn’t take Matt Serra lightly before the fight. In fact, he was a little bit nervous. A little bit? Well okay, maybe he was having a near-panic attack.

But you can’t bury GSP for an isolated incident. Fighting is a brutal sport and if you’re not running through a gamut of emotions then you’re probably a cyborg. The problem is that during his UFC 58 fight against B.J. Penn, he nearly quit on the stool after the first round. The announcers never really addressed it but after watching years of boxing it was clear as day that his corner had to talk him into going out and fighting. It’s a good thing they were able to convince him because we all know how the fight turned out.

So what if this is a trend and what if GSP doesn’t have the mental toughness needed to reach his full physical potential?

If he was nervous for Serra then don’t you think he might be scared shitless of Koscheck, a fighter who has an inane ability of making good fighters look bad?

GSP is a good wrestler with good submissions but his greatest strength is his striking. The concern is that Koscheck is essentially the old New Jersey Devils of the UFC.

The Devils utilized the trap as a way to neutralize an opposing team’s skating ability and bring their offense to a screeching halt. The end result was usually some very boring hockey. When Koscheck hits one of his shots and gets a fighter on their back, it’s the same idea.

The key in this fight won’t be whether Koscheck can execute a shot and take GSP down. The key will be how much his ground and pound has improved. Once he gets GSP on the ground he needs to get to work. Working submissions will be tough because Koscheck hasn’t been taking Jiu-Jitsu long enough to tap out an experienced grappler like GSP. But if he can throw strikes from inside the guard then it will help him break guard and move into the mount.

He’ll not only score points, but he’ll break St. Pierre.

From my limited experience in fighting, nothing is more demoralizing then having someone pounding your face with fists and elbows while you’re flat on your back. It’s a real helpless feeling and I’ve found myself actually wanting to call timeout when I’ve been in that situation. I mean, what can you do when your opponent is “making it rain?”

For GSP, the gameplan is simple: don’t let Koscheck take him down!

After technique, athleticism is the most essential part of having good takedown defense and GSP has athletic ability to spare. But Koscheck will be relentless in going for attempt after attempt. The tricky part is that his striking has improved enough that he can now set up his shots. GSP is going to have to keep things honest and that could open the door for Koscheck. One takedown might be all Koscheck needs if he’s been working on his elbows and fists from inside the guard.

If Koscheck doesn’t stay busy then he’s going to be wasting his time. Lay and pray isn’t going to get him a shot at the welterweight title.

Hell, it might not even be enough to get a decision.

If Koscheck doesn’t do any damage and GSP is able to provide some highlight reel strikes, he might get the benefit of the doubt from the judges. The crowd will also no doubt be behind GSP and that could also sway the judges (i.e. Cecil Peoples).

There are a lot of things that could go right for GSP in this fight but there are just so many things that could go wrong against Koscheck. And unless St. Pierre has been seeing a sports psychologist, Koscheck is the type of fighter whose style could prove frustrating and cause him to crack.

My belief is that Koscheck will hit at least one takedown and that will be GSP’s downfall.

Oh, and just for the record, I did not bet on GSP at UFC 69 so I’m not a disgruntled gambler. However, I do regret that I didn’t bet against him.

Looks like I have a second chance.

UFC’s Kurt Pellegrino to go Inside the Cage…

On this Saturday’s edition of Inside the Cage Radio we’re going to talk with UFC lightweight Kurt Pellegrino. Matt and I have become a HUGE fan of this guy, and I am sure you will too after reading Kurt’s story. In his recent interview he goes into detail about how rough his road has been, his friendship with Hermes Franca , and how much his battle at UFC 74 with Joe “Daddy” Stevenson really means to him…

“I was told I would never be here. I was thrown out of my school. I had nothing. If you ever meet me, the first thing I do is smile and shake your hand. And when I turn away I never call you a bad name. But at one time in my life, I hated everyone and didn’t speak to no one. And getting this belt will prove to everyone who said I can’t, that I could do it. I’m on a quest that isn’t gonna stop until I have that belt around my waist and I can tell everyone ‘I told you so.’ ”

If that doesn’t get you fired up to root for this guy, you need to crank up some Slayer and punch yourself in the face a few times.

Listen to the debut edition of Inside the Cage Radio.

Quoteworthy:

“It’s the biggest fight of my [Dan Henderson] career. It’s a chance to become an undisputed champion in MMA…. He [Quinton “Rampage” Jackson] has some sloppiness in his game that I can take advantage of. He hasn’t looked particularly good in his last two or three fights.”

UFC 75: “Champion vs. Champion” features the unification bout between UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Rampage Jackson and PRIDE FC Middleweight Champion Dan Henderson on September 8 at the O2 Arena in London, England. It will be broadcast via tape delay on the Spike television network for free at 9 p.m. ET. To check out the latest UFC 75 fight card click here.

Check me out on The Jordan Breen Show today…

I wanted to give everyone a quick heads up that I’ll be on The Jordan Breen Show at 3:30 p.m. ET. You can listen to the show via the Sherdog Radio Network at Sherdog.com. I believe that Jordan and I will be having our long-anticipated debate about some of the issues he had with my “Ten Underachievers in MMA” article on CBS Sportsline. BTW, it looks like my “Ten Overachievers in MMA” article could be appearing next week (I’m still working on it, amidst like 50 other things).

UFC Quick Quote: Cote predicts quick finish of Grove at UFC 74

Patrick Cote

“I’m sure I’m 10 times more powerful than him [Kendall Grove], so I’ll go there and do my stuff. I’m very, very confident about all my skills for this fight. I will test his chin, I will test his cardio and I will test all of his skills. When the bell rings, that will be a hell of fight. Trust me … for the next fight, before the bell to end the second round, the fight will be done.”

– Canada’s Patrick Cote tells FightHype.com that he will stop Hawaii’s Kendall Grove less than 10 minutes into their scheduled middleweight clash at UFC 74: “Respect” on August 25. For more on this match up, including videos from “The Spyda” leading up to the bout, check out our UFC 74 archives.

Calvin Ayre responds to Media Life article

If a recent article by Media Life is an accurate indication of ION’s feelings about BodogFIGHT, then it looks as though the feeling about not wanting to continue a contractual relationship past Februay could be mutual as Calvin Ayre has issued a statement in response to the article:

“Since its inception in 2006, Bodog Fight has become one of the heavy-hitters in the world of mixed martial arts, offering fans a unique combination of action and allure from exotic locations throughout the world.

In fact, a fifth installment of the cutting-edge series is scheduled to debut August 21 in the U.S. on the ION Television Network, which has helped introduce the program to viewers in more than 90-million American homes.

A sixth season of Bodog Fight will be shot later this month in Vancouver, Canada for broadcast on ION from October 9, 2007 to February 5, 2008, thereby fulfilling the contract agreed to by both parties.

It is our intention to re-evaluate this relationship when this current deal expires to determine whether it is in the best interest of both going forward.”

Report: Joe Stevenson could fight for title with a win at UFC 74 (and some help)

joe stevenson
With a win over Kurt Pellegrino at UFC 74: “Respect” on August 25, season two welterweight winner of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF), Joe Stevenson, could find himself fighting BJ Penn for the vacant 155-pound title later this year, according to a recent Yahoo!Sports article.

Of course, Sean Sherk would have to be stripped of his belt for the scenario to pan out. And that matter won’t be resolved until sometime in October at the earliest when Sherk appeals his suspension for using illegal steroids at UFC 73 before the California State Athletic Commission (CSAS).

Nonetheless, this report sheds some insight on what might happen if the findings on Sherk are upheld.

Here’s a snip mash:

“UFC President Dana White may have to find someone to fight B.J. Penn for the vacant lightweight title if Sherk is stripped…. White said he hadn’t made up his mind what to do because he said he believes Sherk’s denials, but he said if Sherk is suspended by the commission, he would probably strip him of the belt … [he] concedes that Stevenson may get a shot at the UFC lightweight championship later this year pending the resolution of a steroids complaint filed against champion Sean Sherk by the California Athletic Commission.”

While not set in stone, the recent developments in the division have raised the stakes significantly for Stevenson — beat “Batman” and he’s (possibly) fast tracked himself to a title shot against the Hawaiian.

Here’s a snip from “Daddy:”

“The motivating thing for me is, pushing myself to be better every day knowing that I’m getting near that (title shot) and that it’s becoming more and more of a reality for me. Now is the time more than ever I can’t afford a slip. I totally understand that. Sometimes, when you have a bad fight or whatever, you say to yourself, ‘Well, there’s another time.’ But I can’t afford right now to think that way. I have to be on top of it. I have to be impressive in everything I do now, because I know my chance might depend upon it.”

The 155-pound title fight was booked for UFC 78 on November 17 from the Prudential Arena in Newark, N.J. It’s unclear at this time whether or not that remains the case with Sherk’s appeal just one month beforehand.

MMA Notebook: Fedor’s manager denies rumors; new EliteXC match announced; and more!

Here’s a bullet point look at some MMA stories that are currently making the rounds:

* Fedor’s manager Vadim Finkelstein has quashed rumors in an article on Sherdog.com that his client has signed a contract. There were separate rumors that Fedor had signed with EliteXC and another claiming he had signed a five fight deal with K-1.

* Various outlets are reporting that Marvin Eastman has claimed he’ll be fighting Demian Maia in a clash of middleweights at UFC 77.

* UFCjunkie.com was the first to report yesterday that Eric Schafer will be fighting Stephan Bonnar at UFC 77.

* The Fight Network is reporting that Niko Vitale will be facing Riki Fukuda in a bout between middleweights during the Sept. 15 EliteXC show in Hawaii. The main event will be Murilo “Ninja” Rua vs. Robbie Lawler for the EliteXC middleweight title with other matches including Jake Shields vs. Renato “Charuto” Verrisimo and Nick Diaz vs. Mike Aina. Gina Carano is also slated for the card. It had been thought that she would fight Shayna Baszler following Baszler’s win over Jan Finney on the ShoXC undercard last month but that doesn’t appear to be the case at the moment.

* Charuto was the featured fighter on TapouT last night. It was another good show as they showed you a little bit of the MMA scene in Hawaii and took you inside B.J. Penn’s camp. I recommend you check out the replay!

* The next ShoXC will take place from Vicksburg, Miss. on Saturday, August 25. FiveOuncesOfPain.com was the first site to report that the main event will be Charles “Krazy Horse” Bennett vs. Victor “Joe Boxer” Valenzuela. Combat in the Cage and Extreme Challenge (Northeast) promoter Ed Hsu announced on the Underground forum at MMA.TV that “War Machine” Jon Murphy will be taking on Tony Bonello on the undercard. This will be a good heavyweight clash. Murphy is a beast and Bonello is undefeated. I believe Murphy is looking for sponsors and you can contact Ed Hsu at ecfights@gmail.com if you’re interested.

* Inside the Cage Radio with Matt Cava and myself will return this weekend. We’re currently working on several guests so stay tuned. In the meantime, I strongly recommend you check out our first show by clicking here.
