TUF 6: Episode 2 Recap

Show opens with Serra screaming his head off as Joe Scarola taps from a triangle choke from last week’s fight. They show both locker rooms. Obviously Team Serra is dejected while Team Hughes is elated. So elated that Hughes is breaking out his best Borat impression.

The movie Borat is officially not funny anymore when Matt Hughes is doing the whole “high five” gig after Mac’s victory. Borat has officially jumped the shark. If you’re still using the “high five” schtick, Matt Hughes has officially made it uncool and now is the day to stop.

After Hughes and his fighters are done yukking it up after Mac Danzig’s win, they go through a pretty intense training session. Danzig participates in this training session literally 5-10 minutes after his fight. What a badass.

Back at the house, Joe Scarola is wanting to go home. It’s his first loss, he doesn’t want to be there, and at this point, I kind of feel bad for him. He knows he didn’t get caught in that triangle choke, he found a way out, just like Serra said. Serra stops by, gives Scarola a good ol’ New York style “get ya head outta yer ass” speech and Joe’s on board. At this point I give him credit for toughing it out. That will change later.

UFC 76: Kazuhiro Nakamura fails CSAC drug test

Kazuhiro NakamuraKazuhiro Nakamura tested positive for marijuana in the aftermath of his unanimous decision loss to Ryoto Machida at UFC 76: “Knockout” over the weekend, according to the California State Athletic Commission (CSAC).

Perhaps that explains all the bizarre pre-fight antics.

The Japanese PRIDE FC veteran — who was making his Octagon debut — was fined $500 and suspended for three months.

According to the CSAC report the other 17 fighters in action at the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif., all tested negative for drugs of abuse such as marijuana, heroin, etc.

Test results for anabolic and masking agents, however, are still pending.

Strikeforce show at Playboy Mansion to be streamed by Yahoo! - for FREE!

Strikefore_Playboy_Yahoo

I don’t know about you, but my plans for Saturday evening just changed. Yahoo! has announced that it will be streaming Saturday’s (9/29) fight card from the Playboy Mansion that’s being promoted by the San Jose-based fight promotion Strikeforce.

The stream will be free and will begin at midnight ET.  Check the Yahoo! MMA page for updates

Well, my wife might have prevented me from seeing the show in person but she’s not going to prevent me from watching it on my computer.

And if you’re a friend of mine reading this while in LA because you’ll be attending the show live, I’d just like you to know that I hate you.

Guida vs. Huerta could happen at TUF 6 finale: MMAJunkie.com

Kenny Florian is an awesome radio guest for multiple reasons.

For one, he’s a student of the game and can articulate his points very well.

Two, he’s outspoken. If you listened to this past weekend’s edition of Inside the Cage Radio, he basically called Gomi overrated (which I agree with).

And third, he gave us some good tidbits. First, he told us he wouldn’t be fighting again until 2008 and that Roger Huerta’s next rumored opponent is Clay Guida.

I’m not sure if our friends at MMAJunkie.com had time to listen to the show this week and initially heard Florian’s remark, but regardless, Dann has done some digging and has learned there is some teeth to what Kenny said.

Dann is reporting that sources close to both fighters have confirmed that the fight is in the works to be the main event of the live finale of The Ultimate Fighter 6 on Dec. 8 on Spike TV.

That would be an awesome TV main event.

When I interviewed Dana White several weeks back he said we’d likely see Huerta start to fight the division’s elite and if the fight with Guida happens, he will have definitely been true to his word.

Huerta has the advantage when it comes to the standup but Guida is no pushover in that department. If he can get Huerta to the ground, and I think that he can because his standoff is good enough to setup his takedown, then it will be bye-bye to Huerta’s perfect record.

And if Huerta beats Guida then critics like me will have to admit he’s worthy of the hype.

Forrest Griffin vs Wanderlei Silva - not likely in this year

In a recent interview with MMA Weekly, Forrest Griffin confirmed that although he’s all for taking on the Axe Murderer Wanderlei Silva, that matchup will probably not happen this year.

In his win over Shogun Rua, Griffin suffered a deep gash in his forehead that needs an appropriate time to heal.

Griffin, who specifically asked for the fight with Rua, suffered a large cut on his forehead during the fight, however, and required stitches to close the wound. Because of the injury, a fight between Griffin and Silva on Dec. 29 may not happen either.

“It kind of would, yeah,” said Griffin about a December date with Silva being too soon. “I’d love to fight him if I didn’t have a giant hole in my face right now.

Because of the cut, Griffin will take some time and see if it is even realistic for the fight to happen in December. “We’ll see medically,” Griffin stated about the December card. “[It’ll] take a couple of weeks to figure it out.”

Forrest Griffin does not back down from any challenge, so we are glad he’s not rushing into a fight with Wandy. Let’s hope this bout takes place in early ‘08, then one of these two can challenge Rampage for the belt.

UFC 78: Akihiro Gono vs. Tamdan McCrory

Akihiro Gono (27-12-1) will make his Octagon debut against Tamdan McCrory (8-0) at UFC 78 in Newark, N.J., on November 17, according to Sherdog.com.

The PRIDE FC veteran competed at 183 pounds throughout his career; however, he is going to test the waters at 170 pounds against the gangly Binghamton, N.Y., product.

Here’s a snip from Gono:

“I know his fight record. I know that he’s tall, young and has a long reach…. For my body frame, that weight class was too heavy for me anyway. I felt a bit of pain in my knees and ankles [fighting at a heavier weight class]. My perfect weight may even be 70 kilograms (155 pounds).”

Gono is an accomplished fighter whose last three losses came to notables such as Denis Kang (unanimous decision), Dan Henderson (knockout) and Mauricio “Shogun” Rua (technical knockout).

During that same stretch, the Team Grabaka-trained fighter has eight wins, which includes a unanimous decision win over Hector Lomabard — the opponent for Karo Parisyan that same night at the Prudential Arena.

It should be real interesting to see Gono in the welterweight mix, considering he has spent most of his career fighting bigger and stronger opponents.

And it doesn’t get much bigger (er, taller) than “The Barncat.”

At 6’4,” McCrory is exceptionally tall for the division and will no doubt hold a considerable reach advantage over Gono (and most of his other opponents for that matter). The 20-year-old college student and self-described “nerd” has one win in as many attempts inside the Octagon, submitting Pete Spratt (triangle choke) at UFC Fight Night 10 in June of this year.

UFC News & Notes: Henderson likes heavyweight; Big ‘Nog vs. Kongo; and Hamill vs. Bisping rematch

Here are some of the latest news and rumors pertaining to the UFC:

- UFCDaily.com is reporting a rumored match between Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira vs. Cheick Kongo. After the Jardine and Griffin upsets, I’m convinced we’ll end up seeing Randy vs. Kongo for the heavyweight title.

- The Fight Network is reporting that the UFC is encouraging Dan Henderson to move to middleweight but Henderson wants to stay at 205 lbs. He has one fight left on his current deal and feels he could be ready to fight again in November. Dan, we all know you’re a badass and cannot only hang with light heavyweights, but probably even heavyweights. But please, the UFC middleweight division desperately needs your talents! To me, a Hendo vs. Anderson Silva in a unification is actually a bigger money matchup then some of the matches the UFC is looking at in the light heavyweight division right now. The UFC may need to sign him to an extension in order to convince him to compete regularly at 185 lbs.

- MMAJunkie.com is on top of the whole Michael Bisping vs. Matt Hamill rematch situation. It looks like it was indeed talked about for UFC 78 in Newark but Hamill’s knee injury won’t allow it. However, Hamill said via his personal website that the injury is not so bad that he won’t be ready for a rematch at UFC 79 on Dec. 29. I‘m telling you, the best place for a Hamill vs. Bisping rematch is on free TV when you consider the reason why there’s interest in a rematch to begin with.

- I saw on BloodyElbow.com that former UFC lightweight fighter Yves Edwards is now with American Top Team. I’d like to echo Luke Thomas’ opinion that this is a great move for him.

ShoXC to return on Oct. 26 featuring Javi Vazquez, Aaron Rosa, and Muhsin Corbbrey

FiveOuncesOfPain.com has learned that EliteXC is planning another ShoXC card to be televised on Showtime on Friday, October 26, at 11 p.m. ET.

The card is subject to change but right now it’s looking like the main event that was leaked on the Underground forum between Javier Vazquez vs. J.C. Pennington will indeed be happening.

Undercard matches on Showtime are expected to include the return of Aaron Rosa, who made a strong impression during the first ShoXC when he took out the more heralded Jefferson Silva. Rosa, with a perfect 9-0 record, will be taking on another undefeated fighter, 8-0 Jared Hamman.

Showing even more of a commitment to women’s MMA, Showtime will be televising a female match not involving Gina Carano. Shayna Baszler, who defeated Jan Finney during the non-televised portion of the first ShoXC, will be taking on Jennifer Tate. A win by Baszler could put her a step closer to a match with Carano.

Muhsin Corbbrey, who won his ShoXC debut via decision over the rugged Lee Gibson at the first ShoXC, will also be back on the card in a match against Bobby McMasters.

Kaleo Kwan is also slated to fight Malaipet.
