Quick results for Combat in the Cage on Oct. 6

Here are the quick results for tonight’s Combat in the Cage show in Trenton, NJ at the Sovereign Bank Arena:

1. Tinh Tupy won a unanimous decision over Rick Desper in a bantamweight match

2. Baba Shigeyashu won a split decision over Anthony Montaro in a lightweight bout

3. Mike Shenk looked very impressive in submitting Steve McCabe with a rear naked choke at 2:25 of round 1

4. Aaron Miesner defeated Chris Reedy via TKO at 1:25 of round 1. Miesner dominated the fight and had a tremendous size advantage. Reedy took the fight on short notice and agreed to the fight at 185 lbs. even though he normally competes at 170 lbs. Miesner cuts from 200-plus and appeared to be about 195 lbs. for the fight. Reedy didn’t take the loss well as he stormed off before the official decision was announced.

5. Pat McGreal won via TKO (ground strikes) over Mike Groves at 0:42 of round 2. Groves trains out of the Fight Factory in Philadelphia and I believe Eddie Alvarez was in his corner.

6. Wilson Reis improved his pro record to 2-0 with a submission victory via rear naked choke against Diego Jimenez at 2:00 of round 1. Jimenez is a strong fighter who trains out of Anthracite Combat Club in Minersville, PA. Anthracite is the same school where Shane Ott and Jon Murphy train out of. The win by Reis was impressive and he really worked the choke in even though Jimenez was defending it well. Jimenez didn’t tap and instead allowed himself to go to sleep.

7. Tim Carpenter submitted Sean McCaan with a triangle choke at 1:43 of round 1 for the Combat in the Cage Light Heavyweight Title. This match ended in controversy because Carpenter had McCaan in a full triangle but the ref stopped the match because of a cut on McCaan’s head. The doctor cleared him and the referee re-started the match with McCaan in a full choke. It appeared as though as he tapped but he was disputing the outcome. I’m not completely positive, but I think he was complaining that the choke was in much deeper than it was prior to the re-start. Crowd heavily booed the outcome.

8. Jim Bova won the Combat in the Cage lightweight title when he submitted Mark Getto with a rear naked choke in round 1. I do not have the official time but I believe it was at about 1:45 into the round. Bova trains out of Anthracite.

9. Zach Makovsky won a unanimous decision over Emerson Souza to claim the Combat in the Cage Bantamweight title. Makovsky trains out of the Fight Factory and had Eddie Alvarez in his corner.

Jon Murphy was supposed to fight Jason Dolloff in the main event but the match was scratched from the card after Dolloff’s medicals did not check out. Apparently he had a pre-existing medical condition and didn’t follow the doctor’s recommended course of treatment. The NJ State Athletic Control Board had some questions about Dolloff’s medical records and called his doctor. They must have not liked what they heard.

Murphy attended the show and looked ready to fight. He’s hoping to return to action sooner rather than later.

Also, there was some talk backstage about the cancellation of CFFC 6. A lot of people are unhappy with how things played out and word is that CFFC promoter Felix Martinez could face an uphill battle in being able to promote a card in New Jersey again.

Josh Koscheck to fight in early 2008 (exclusive)

josh koscheckUFC welterweight stand out Josh Koscheck won’t return to action until sometime in early 2008 (January or February) UFCmania.com (www.UFCmania.com) learned today.

The four-time NCAA Division I wrestling All American was penciled in to fight at UFC 79 on December 29. However, he was informed earlier this week that plans had changed.

“I’m no longer fighting in December,” Koscheck told UFCmania.com this afternoon. “Now I’m told to be ready for January or February of next year.”

Pressed for a potential opponent “Kos” indicated that he has not been approached with any specific names.

He did say, however, “I’ll fight anyone. I want to fight the best guys at 170. The loss to Georges St. Pierre taught me a lot. I told [UFC President] Dana White before I even got into the lockeroom after that bout that I’d fight the next week if he’d let me. I’m itching to get back.”

Koscheck, of course, dropped a unanimous decision to St. Pierre at UFC 74: “Respect” back in August. “Rush” is now poised for a title shot against the winner of Matt Serra and Matt Hughes on New Year’s Eve weekend.

We’ll post the entire interview with Koscheck later on this weekend — he’s got some interesting things to say about his loss to St. Pierre, his future with the UFC (he’s finally completed his nine-fight obligation on The Ultimate Fighter contract from three years ago) and much more.

Stay tuned.

Video: Chris Lytle talks about fighting for the WEC

MMAFighting.com has made exclusive video available to us and below is a recent video interview conducted with Chris Lytle. In the interview, Lytle mentions that he could fight for the UFC again in November or December but also confirms that there is some teeth to the rumors that he could end up fighting in the WEC.

Lytle is very complementary of the WEC in this video and has fought for them in the past before the promotion was acquired by Zuffa. It sound that Lytle is very intrigued about the possibility of challenging Carlos Condit for the WEC welterweight title.

Damnit, Kimbo Vs. Tank Abbott Has Been Cancelled

What a shame, CFFC has been cancelled. I actually lost confidence in CFFC during their last event which had Kimbo vs. Ray Mercer as the main event, but that pay-per-view event was also garbage, it wasn’t available on most TV’s in the world. I had to resort to finding it after the fight was over when a friend emailed me the video.

So I can’t say I’m surprised that this fight has been cancelled, but I’m disappointed. Although I suspect this fight would’ve resulted in a similar outcome as the Ray Mercer fight. I think Kimbo would eventually take Tank to the ground and submit him. But it woulda been nice to see Tank knock Kimbo out.

UFC negotiations with HBO end without an agreement

Multichannel.com is reporting the following:

The long-rumored distribution deal between Home Box Office and Ultimate Fighting Championship has been KO’d.

The premium service said it will not air live UFC combat sports events on its network in the near future, ending more than a year of negotiations.

“After lots of discussion it became apparent that the business model doesn’t make sense for either one of us. So we agreed to go our separate ways,” said HBO Sports president Ross Greenburg in a statement. “You never know what the future holds. We have enormous respect and admiration for the executives we dealt with at the UFC. We wish them well.”

HBO has been in talks with UFC about carrying live UFC events on the 28-million subscriber pay service, but sources close to both sides said the discussions had heated up over the past two months. In fact, UFC President Dana White was quoted in the Miami Herald this past August guaranteeing a HBO/UFC deal by the end of 2007, saying that it would “definitely be in place for a winter fight.”

Representatives for the UFC could not be reached for comment at press time.

The HBO/UFC breakdown could bode well for Spike TV, which is hoping to extend its deal with the UFC — which includes the popular reality series The Ultimate Fighter — before it expires sometime next year.

The network’s Sept. 8 airing of the UFC 75 event featuring UFC light-heavyweight champion Quinton “Rampage” Jackson drew 4.7 million viewers, the most watched UFC event ever in North America and the most-watched non-World Wrestling Entertainment show in Spike’s history, according to the network.

Spike officials said the network is “optimistic” it can reach an accord with the combat sports outfit.

Considering how confident White was at one point that the UFC and HBO would be able to close a deal, this has to be viewed as a tremendous setback. A deal with HBO would have been huge for MMA in that it would be another step towards greater mainstream acceptance.

It will be interest to see how White reacts. Something like this could motivate him to do something big with ESPN, which reaches more homes than HBO and would carry the same brand of legitimacy.

It will also be interesting to see where HBO goes from here. Have they completely soured on MMA, or just the UFC? And if they are still open to the idea of televising mixed martial arts will they look to an existing promotion (Strikeforce comes to mind as an ideal partner)?
