Quoteworthy:

“I’m totally committed to returning to the cage injury free and anxious about fighting in England for the first time. It is very exciting for both Ryan and I. We will be making MMA history by being the first father and son to ever fight on the same card…. This is a great opportunity we are getting with EliteXC. Give me a fight or two and I will be ready to fight anybody.”

UFC Hall of Fame inductee, Ken Shamrock, talks about his return to mixed martial arts (MMA) compettion under the EliteXC banner. In fact, the 43-year-old is already penciled in to mix it up at “EliteXC Presents: Cage Rage 25″ on Saturday, March 8, at Wembley Arena in London, England. No opponent has been named. There’s recent speculation that “The World’s Most Dangerous Man” will perhaps challenge his adopted brother, Frank Shamrock, later on in 2008 or early 2009 in a coproduction with the San Jose-based StrikeForce outfit.

UFC 80: BJ Penn and Joe Stevenson fight talk (Video)

Perhaps the lack of hostility and the amount of respect that BJ Penn and Joe Stevenson have for one another heading into their showdown this weekend are among the reasons no one seems to be amped for this fight.

Even if you don’t like the rest of the card this main event is going to showcase a nice scrap.

Not to mention it will crown a new lightweight champion and set up some great fights for the remainder of 2008 (barring shoulder surgery, steroid suspension or some other issue, of course).

Wake up, maniacs. Sheesh.

Changing Your Mixed Martial Arts Cardio Routines

To get the most effective cardio workout results change your routine up on a regular basis. On day 1 jog as you would normally do. On day 2 jog while wearing a weighted pack back on. You can stuff your backpack with anything such as weight plates, rocks etc just make sure the back pack is strong enough to hold all that weight. Day 3 run on an incline backwards this can be done on a treadmill or up a slope/hill.

On day 4 hit the track jog 1/4 of the way then sprint full speed another 1/4 then drop squat and duck another 1/4 then run backwards for the 1/4 and do it again. Day 5 you can swim and run in the pool. Day 6 skip rope changing variations of the timing for 3 minutes immediately after that start shadow boxing for another 3 minutes then hit the mat with a partner for another 3 minutes for a sparring match. This type of training will give you well rounded cardio endurance for your next mixed martial arts match.

UFC 84: Mac Danzig vs. Mark Bocek

UFC 84 mac danzig vs mark bocek
Mac Danzig (17-4-1) — the welterweight winner of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 6 — will make his lightweight debut inside the Octagon against Mark Bocek (5-1) at UFC 84 on April 19 in Montreal, Canada, according to FightNetwork.com.

Danzig snapped a two-fight losing streak when he made his Octagon debut, defeating Tommy Speer at the TUF 6 Finale on December 8, 2007, to capture the TUF 6 welterweight crown. The PETA poster boy announced during his post-fight interview that he intended to compete at lightweight (155 pounds) going forward.

That decision pits him against Bocek — a Brazilian jiu-jitsu specialist from Canada with two UFC fights already under his belt. He has one win (unanimous decision) over Doug Evans at UFC 79: “Nemesis” and one loss (technical knockout) to Frank Edgar at UFC 73: “Stacked.”

Not surprisingly Bocek is another Canadian who adds more Canadian flavor to the Canadian card. To check out the most recent UFC 84 fight card click here.

UFC 84: Jason MacDonald vs. Joe Doerksen

Jason MacDonald Joe Doerksen

Canadian middleweight fighters Jason MacDonald (19-9) and Joe Doerksen (39-11) are slated to compete against one another during the first-ever UFC show to be held north of the U.S. border, UFC 84, on Saturday, April 19, according to RDS.ca.

The pay-per-view (PPV) event is expected to take place at the The Bell Centre in Montreal, Canada.

MacDonald has lost two of his last three fights inside the Octagon since emerging in early 2006 with submission wins over Ed Herman and Chris Leben, earning him the self-proclaimed nickname, “The TUF Killer.” Those two most recent losses, however, came to two of the top contenders in the division, Rich Franklin and Yushin Okami.

“El Dirte” is an experienced fighter who has been competing under the UFC banner off-and-on since 2004. He will look to end a two-fight losing skid. Doerksen challenged Paulo Filho for the WEC 185-pound belt in August 2007 and was stopped via technical knockout (strikes). Three months later he took on Ed Herman at UFC 78: “Validation” and was knocked out in round three.

This will be a rematch — MacDonald and Doerksen first met up at an Ultimate Cage Wars (UCW) show in 2005 at the Winnipeg Convention Center. “The Athlete” came away with the win, submitting Doerksen via rear naked choke in round four.

Report: UFC releases several fighters from The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 6

the ultimate fighter 6 tuf 6
Zuffa is clearing a little TUF 6 house just one month after the mixed martial arts (MMA) reality series wrapped in December 2007, according to Sam Caplan.

Here’s the cut list:

Maybe a show that showcases 16 up-and-coming welterweight (the promotion’s most stacked division) fighters wasn’t such a good idea after all. Not to mention the eventual winner, Mac Danzig, immediately dropped to lightweight.

We’ll never get all that time back … sorry Jesse. Hindsight is 20/20.

UFC Quick Quote: Loss helps Kendall Grove prepare for Jorge Rivera UFC 80 fight

kendall grove

“I couldn’t of asked for better training. I came up to Big Bear for this one. I just can’t wait to fight…. When you lose, you definitely don’t want to lose again. That’s what motivates you to get on it. I pushed my cardio and I pushed my stand-up even more. I made some mistakes in my last fight and I don’t want to make the same mistakes again…. My fans are gonna expect the same ‘Spyder’ like they’ve seen on the show … exciting. Some ground and pound. Look for some submissions. As long as I go in there and give it all I got, that’s all I need in my eyes.”

– Season three winner of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF), Kendall Grove, tells MMAWeekly.com that his recent loss to Patrick Cote has helped him prepare for his upcoming 185-pound tilt with Jorge Rivera at UFC 80: “Rapid Fire” this weekend. “Da Spyder” returned to the relative seclusion of Big Bear, Calif., to prepare for the bout and get back on the path to title contention.
