We give the UFC props for not shredding Houston Alexander’s contract as soon as he took his second consecutive first-round knockout loss last month against James Irvin, but even the most compassionate among us would agree — if it happens again, he’ll be heading out the door. D-Day for “The Assassin” is now looking like September 17th; MMA Junkie reports that Alexander has agreed to a bout against Eric Schafer at UFC Fight Night 14. Schafer made his Octagon debut at UFC 62 with a submission win over Rob MacDonald, but lost his next two bouts via TKO to Michael Bisping and Stephan Bonnar. “Red” has since rallied in the Gladiators Fighting Series organization, where he’s posted back-to-back wins. Alexander had reportedly been offered several fights in August and September before settling on the Schafer matchup.

In other UFC fight-booking news, MMAMania passes along a rumor that a middleweight match between Ed Herman and Alan Belcher will also be on the UFN 14 card. Both men are coming off losses, to Demian Maia and Jason Day, respectively. And speaking of middleweights, a fight between Alessio Sakara and Rob Yundt has been added to the undercard of The Ultimate Fighter 7 finale on June 21st. Rob Yundt lost his Octagon debut to Ricardo Almeida at UFC 81 after taking the fight on very short notice. Sakara is 3-4 with one no-contest in the UFC, and was most recently dropped by Chris Leben at UFC 82.

Wow … talk about a reception for UFC Welterweight Champion, Matt Serra, during the official weigh-in for UFC 83: “Serra vs. St. Pierre 2” this afternoon.

It was a downright hostile crowd at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, which is not surprising considering Serra’s opponent — and hometown star — Georges St. Pierre, as well as his “disparaging” remarks heading into this event.

I just can’t fathom what it’s going to be like tomorrow night when the fight actually takes place.

“If you’re pissed right now, wait until Saturday night,” Serra shouted over the crowd. Something tells me the Mounties should crack out the riot gear just in case that prediction is accurate.

Meanwhile, Michael Bisping and Charles McCarthy head a head-bumping, obscenity-swapping staredown. And there’s clearly no love lost between Jason MacDonald and Joe Doerksen.

Amazing stuff.

At any rate, here are the complete UFC 83 weigh-in results:

170 lbs.: Matt Serra (169.5) vs. Georges St. Pierre (169.5)
185 lbs.: Rich Franklin (185.5) vs. Travis Lutter (185)
185 lbs.: Michael Bisping (185.5) vs. Charles McCarthy (186)
155 lbs.: Mac Danzig (154.5) vs. Mark Bocek (154.5)
185 lbs.: Kalib Starnes (186) vs. Nate Quarry (185.5) — swing bout
185 lbs.: Jason MacDonald (185) vs. Joe Doerksen (184.5)
185 lbs.: Alan Belcher (185) vs. Jason Day (183.5)
185 lbs.: Ed Herman (185.5) vs. Demian Maia (184.5)
155 lbs.: Sam Stout (155.5) vs. Rich Clementi (155)
265 lbs.: Cain Velasquez (235.5) vs. Brad Morris (225.5)
170 lbs.: Jonathan Goulet (169.5) vs. Kuniyoshi Hironaka (170)

*Note: Fighters are allowed to weigh one pound more than the division limit in non-title fights.

The televised portion of the pay-per-view (PPV) event begins tomorrow (Saturday, April 19) at 10 p.m. ET. We will provide LIVE blow-by-blow, round-by-round coverage of the main card action at this time.

UFC 83 quick results, however, will begin to flow earlier than that here at MMAmania.com at about 8:00 p.m. ET with the prelim fights.

Tomorrow is going to be insane — it’s going to be absolute pandemonium inside the Bell Centre. Remember to hit us up for all the latest results coverage before, during and after the action.

April 19, 2008, will be a historical evening for mixed martial arts.

It will mark the UFC’s first foray into Canada with UFC 83. The venue at the Bell Centre in Montreal is one of the biggest — if not the biggest venue — the UFC has attempted to fill and it did so in record time.

This date will also mark Jason “Dooms” Day’s Octagon debut. The Canadian product is coming off a huge — albeit controversial — split decision win over David “The Crow” Loiseau at the Hardcore Championship Fighting event back in February. The UFC obviously saw what they needed because Jason was inked to a four fight contract immediately after the win.

Here’s a snip from Jason about the big call:

“I started shaking, I got all nervous -– it was a total adrenaline rush, it was awesome.”

His debut comes against a tough veteran in Alan Belcher who stopped fellow Canadian Kalib Starnes at UFC 77: “Hostile Territory” with one of the nastiest skull-revealing cuts ever. “The Talent” looked to be in fine form that night. And if he comes with the same fire at UFC 83, Jason is going to have his hands full.

When asked about his opponent Jason had this to say:

“I’ve always said he looks good, I mean I have respect for him. I think there’s a few holes in his game that I’ve kind of picked out … he’s fast, his hands are fast. He looked sharp out there, he’s quick and he’s aggressive. I think I’m going to have the fight with Alan Belcher that I thought I was going to have with Loiseau. I think Belcher is going to be my opportunity to get out there and reveal what I’ve been working on.”

Jason is a dedicated fighter as he works full time building homes up in Calgary during the day and trains well into the nights. He is looking forward, however, to leaving that behind.

Here’s another snip:

“Hopefully over the next six months I won’t be banging nails anymore, I could just be in the gym training full time.”

Confidence is not an issue with Jason –- he’s been preparing to walk through the gates of the Octagon in the UFC for a long time. With wins over notable opponents Loiseau, Ron Faircloth and Jonathan Goulet and his only recent loss coming at the heavy hands of Patrick Cote, Jason is poised to make the most of the opportunity put in front of him.

It’s now or never.

Patrick Cote (12-4) slipped some ice, sprained his knee and will be unable to compete on the UFC 83: “Serra vs. St. Pierre II” card at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec, on April 19, according to FightNetwork.com.

Alan Belcher (12-4) — the man who “The Predator” was supposed to take on in the middleweight bout — will instead throw leather with Jason Day (15-5). In fact, according to the report, rumors that Cote and Belcher would square off in the first place were completely inaccurate.

Here’s a snip from Cote’s manager, Stephane Patry:

“We were still talking [to the UFC] about an opponent when Patrick fell on the ice. He went for the MRI, and the doctor told him it’s sprained and he can’t train for four to six weeks – so he won’t be available to fight [in April]… We were not going to take that fight [with Belcher] anyway. It wouldn’t make sense.”

Zing! I’m not so sure about that last comment, Stephane.

Anyway, it’s bad news for Cote, who was looking forward to fighting in front of his hometown crowd. Perhaps now he will take up the UFC on its offer to be involved in the telecast as a guest announcer … stay tuned.

As for the fight, Day is a solid Canadian fighter who most recently defeated David Loiseau via controversial split decision (aren’t they all?) at Hardcore Championship Fighting: “Destiny” earlier this month. He’s on a four-fight win streak since losing to Cote via technical knockout in June 2007 in a TKO event.

This will mark his Octagon debut.

Belcher was booked to take on Ricardo Almeida at UFC 81: “Breaking Point” just a few weeks ago; however, he had to withdraw just days before the event because of a severe bronchitis infection.

“The Talent” has won his last two bouts against Kalib Starnes and Sean Salmon.

Patrick Cote (12-4) is penciled in to take on Alan Belcher (12-4) in a middleweight scrap at UFC 83: “Serra vs. St. Pierre II” on April 19 from the Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec, according to MMAWeekly.com.

This latest news — albeit unofficial — rounds out the 10-fight Canadian-riddled card. In fact, “The Predator” is one of eight combatants slated to compete that evening with roots north of the United States border.

Cote is on a three-fight win streak inside the Octagon after dropping his first four matches. He has stopped Kendall Grove and Drew McFedries each in the first round his last two times out and has looked impressive while doing it.

He’s finally got confidence to go along with a solid skill set … Belcher is another nice test to see where he is at in the 185-pound division.

“The Talent” was booked to take on Ricardo Almeida at UFC 81: “Breaking Point” just two weeks ago; however, he had to withdraw just days before the event because of a severe bronchitis infection.

He, too, has a nice streak to uphold, winning his last two bouts against Kalib Starnes and Sean Salmon.

With a win, either fighter will more than likely be poised for a bigger match later in the year against a top contender in the division. The other will drop to 12-5 and have to get back to the drawing board.

The rematch between UFC Welterweight Champion, Matt Serra, and 170-pound interim titleholder, Georges St. Pierre, will headline the pay-per-view (PPV) event.

Alan Belcher has come down with a “sever case of bronchitis” and will be unable to take on Ricardo Almeida at UFC 81: “Breaking Point” this weekend at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.

In his place undefeated Alaska Fighting Championship veteran, Rob Yundt (6-0), has stepped up to fill-in on ridiculous short notice.

Here’s the skinny from UFC.com:

“Unbeaten UFC newcomer Rob Yundt (6-0) has stepped in on short notice to replace middleweight up and comer Alan Belcher against Ricardo Almeida on Saturday night’s UFC 81 card in Las Vegas. Belcher was forced to withdraw from the bout due to a severe case of bronchitis.”

This is terrible news for Belcher who was looking to tack on his third straight win inside the Octagon. He most recently defeated Kalib Starnes at UFC 77: “Hostile Territory” in November 2007 and prior to that he choked out Sean Salmon at UFC 71: “Liddell vs. Jackson” in just 23 seconds.

It’s a bit bizarre because up until this afternoon Belcher was conducting interviews and appeared to have every intention of fighting.

Yundt is a Wolf Pack fighter who trains alongside UFC veteran Doug Evans at Anchorage Brazilian jiu-jitsu. He last competed in October 2007 and has just two fights to his credit in all of last year. However, that’s two more than his upcoming opponent this weekend, Almeida.

In fact, “Cachorrao” last appeared inside the Octagon back in 2002 and is making a return to mixed martial arts action after taking more than three years off from professional competition. He’s an animal on the ground thanks to the Brazilian jiu-jitsu training of Renzo Gracie.

Back in his heyday Almeida went up against some of the best in the sport: Ryo Chonan (win), Nathan Marquardt (win) and Kazuo Masaki (win), among others.

This should be a very tough fight for Yundt, but kudos to him for even taking the fight.

There’s no telling if the Almeida fight will remain on the main card or it will become the swing bout and the Tyson Griffin lighweight showdown with Gleison Tibau will get promoted to the televised portion of the main card.

Stay tuned. In the meantime check out the latest UFC 81 fight card right here.

“My speed and my strength and everything is like retarded right now. In this camp I was just concentrating on explosiveness and speed, and I think that I’m going to be the best athlete in the sport. You’re going to see a whole different person than my old fights. Of course Almeida, in my opinion, is a lot tougher than Kalib. Not tougher, but a better competitor than Kalib Starnes, so it’s going to be difficult. I really want to knock this guy out. If you really want to know how I feel about this fight, I need a knockout really bad. I can taste it. I haven’t gotten the kind of knockout that I want. I want to just be dominant. I want to just drop him…. The prediction … I have to say, Ricardo’s gotta go in one minute and 11 seconds of the first round. I have been shown signs and ‘111’ is the number. KO. Anchor punch.”

– Alan Belcher will look for his third consecutive win inside the Octagon when he takes on veteran Ricardo Almeida in a middleweight tilt at UFC 81: “Breaking Point” on February 2. “The Talent” predicts a quick finish over the Renzo Gracie-trained Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt who returns to action after a three-year self-imposed layoff from mixed martial arts (MMA) competition. If he pulls it off it will be quite a feat … “Cachorrao” is a fine addition to the 185-pound weight class.

UFC 81: “Breaking Point” is set for Saturday, February 2 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The Super Bowl weekend special will air on pay-per-view (PPV) at 10 p.m. ET with the main card action. And of course, MMAmania.com will provide LIVE fight-by-fight, round-by-round coverage at this time.

In addition, we will post quick results of the prelim action at around 7:30 p.m. ET.

Here’s the complete line up:

Main event:

Antonio Rodrigo “Minotauro” Nogueira (30-4- 1) vs. Tim Sylvia (24-3) for interim UFC Heavyweight Championship

Main card (televised):

Hvywt.: Frank Mir (10-3) vs. Brock Lesnar (1-0)
185 lbs.: Nate Marquardt (25-7-2) vs. Jeremy Horn (79-16-5)
185 lbs.: Alan Belcher (11-3) vs. Ricardo Almeida (8-2)

Undercard (May not be broadcast):

155 lbs.: Tyson Griffin (10-1) vs. Gleison Tibau (15-4)
170 lbs.: Chris Lytle (24-15-5) vs. Kyle Bradley (13-4)
185 lbs.: Terry Martin (16-3) vs. Marvin Eastman (14-7-1)
185 lbs.: David Heath (7-2) vs. Tim Boetsch (6-1)
155 lbs.: Keita Nakamura (14-2-2) vs. Rob Emerson (6-6)

At this point the co feature of the evening — Frank Mir vs. Brock Lesnar — has got me incredibly intrigued. There’s just no telling what is going to happen during that fight — Lesnar is raw and powerful and Mir is experienced and inconsistent.

How will this one unfold?

We can’t wait to find out, as well as check out the battle between former UFC heavyweight champion, Sylvia, and former Pride FC heavyweight champion, Minotauro Noguiera.

It’s going to get real interesting … and it’s all just one week away.

Remember: PPV prices will be increased to $44.95 starting with this show. Therefore, if you’re too cheap to cough up an extra few dollars then definitely hit us up for all the LIVE coverage you can handle come fight night.

Many of our readers check-in before, during and after the PPV telecast to share their thoughts on the action.

Therefore, feel free to leave a comment or 10 before you leave and chat with many of our readers during the show — it always turns out to be a great discussion.

In addition, keep in mind that we will also be the spot for the latest news, recaps and post-fight analysis after UFC 81.

In the meantime feel free to share your thought and predictions on the fight outcomes in the comments section below.
