UFC 89 Bonus Payouts + Videos

(Lytle vs. Taylor)

The UFC released its customary end-of-night bonuses for yesterday’s event in Birmingham. $40,000 bumps went to the following fighters:

Fight of the Night: Chris Lytle and Paul Taylor for their three-round throwdown, which was even brawlier than the main event.

Knockout of the Night: Luis Cane for his TKO-via-punches victory over Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou.

Submission of the Night: As Fowlkes predicted, Jim Miller gets it for tapping David Baron via Millerplata — which is just a fancy name for a rear-naked-choke.

UFC Quick Quote: Will Josh Koscheck stand with Chris Lytle at UFC 86?

koscheck lytle

“To be honest I think at the beginning he will definitely try and test the waters on his feet, but in my opinion when push comes to shove and things become a little bit harder you tend to fall back to what you know best – in his case that is wrestling. I won’t be too surprised if after a few minutes he decides to try taking me to the ground. It is kind of hard with someone like him that has developed striking – I have to be prepared for that, I don’t want to get caught not giving him the respect he deserves there; but I’m definitely thinking he is going to try to take me down.”

– Chris Lytle thinks that if he does it won’t be long before Koscheck goes for the takedown, according to a recent interview with PunchDrunkGamer.com, which in this case would appear to be the wise approach. However, in has last three fights “Kos” has made no secret that his intentions were to display his improving Muay Thai and boxing skills rather that rely on his amazing wrestling abilities. It worked against Diego Sanchez and Dustin Hazelett; however, Georges St. Pierre switched things up on him. To trade blows with Lytle at UFC 86: “Jackson vs. Griffin” at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, on July 5 might not be the best gameplan for Koscheck — “Lights Out” has great MMA boxing.

Video: Matt Serra vs. Chris Lytle

Here’s a fun fact: Matt Serra’s Ultimate Fighter 4 Finale match against Chris Lytle (11/11/06) was his sixth-consecutive pro fight to end in a decision. “The Terror” went 3-3 during that stretch, suffering notable losses to B.J. Penn and Karo Parisyan, but turned his career around by edging out Lytle in a split decision — in which two of the judges scored it 30-27 for Serra and the other scored it an equally plausible 30-27 for Lytle — and earning his title shot.

Koscheck to Face Lytle, Mir to Face McCully, Xyience to Face Angry Creditors

FM
(Frank Mir poses in front of the world’s ugliest ring girls.)

Some UFC-related notes as we build up to tonight’s four-hour block of awesomeness…

— Josh Koscheck, who recently signed a new multi-fight contract with the UFC, confirmed yesterday that he will be facing Chris Lytle at UFC 86 (July 5th, Las Vegas). “Lights Out” Lytle (25-15-5, 4-7 UFC) has lost to a who’s who of welterweight stars during his time in the Octagon — Matt Hughes, Matt Serra, Robbie Lawler, and Karo Parisyan among them — but may be on the comeback trail after beating the dogshit out of Kyle Bradley at UFC 81.

— Frank Mir and Justin McCully have also been booked for a bout at UFC 86. With the heavyweight class as thin as it is right now, we wouldn’t put it past the UFC to offer Mir an immediate title shot depending on his performance in July; his disposal of Brock Lesnar at “Breaking Point” proved that he could still be a viable contender. McCully won a decision against Antoni Hardonk during his UFC debut last April, and has won his last four fights overall, but the matchup still feels like it’s intended to be a tuneup for the former champion.

— Xyience Inc. was sold yesterday to Manchester Consolidated Corp. for $15 million. According to the Las Vegas Review Journal:

The sale price will cover only part of the secured debt at Xyience, debtor attorney Laurel Davis said after the hearing. As a result, unsecured creditors and stockholders in Xyience will recover none of their money, she said…

Manchester, which submitted the only approved bid, will pay $200,000 in cash and will assume $14.8 million in debt…

Separately, unsecured creditors on Monday filed a lawsuit in federal court, saying the judge should take $14.8 million in assets from the Fertittas for the benefit of Xyience creditors.

In related news, that hot brunette from the Xyience commercials has been spotted wearing a barrel held up by suspenders. Okay, not really, but it’s an amusing image!

No surprise, Brock Lesnar was the top earner of the night, raking in a quarter-million dollars for his 90-second submission loss to Frank Mir. He could have pocketed another $200,000 with a win in his Octagon debut.

Antonio Rodrigo “Minotauro” Nogueira took home a nice chuck of change ($200,000) for his stoppage of Tim Sylvia, and Nate Marquardt didn’t make out too bad, either, with his convincing win over Jeremy Horn.

Here are all the UFC 81 payouts:

Antonio Rodrigo “Minotauro” Nogueira — $200,000 ($100,000 to show, $100,000 to win)
Tim Sylvia — $100,000
Nogueira defeated Sylvia via submission (guillotine choke) in round three

Frank Mir — $80,000 ($40,000 to show, $40,000 to win)
Brock Lesnar — $250,000

Nate Marquardt — $52,000 ($26,000 to show, $26,000 to win)
Jeremy Horn — $25,000
Marquardt defeated Horn via submission (guillotine choke) in round two

Ricardo Almeida — $40,000 ($20,000 to show, $20,000 to win)
Rob Yundt — $5,000
Almeida defeated Yundt via submission (guillotine choke) in round one

Tyson Griffin — $36,000 ($18,000 to show, $18,000 to win)
Gleison Tibau — $11,000
Griffin defeated Tibau via unanimous decision

Chris Lytle — $24,000 ($12,000 to show, $12,000 to win)
Kyle Bradley — $4,000
Lytle defeated Bradley via technical knockout (strikes) in round one

Tim Boetsch — $12,000 ($6,000 to show, $6,000 to win)
David Heath — $6,000
Boetsch defeated Heath via technical knockout (strikes) in round one

Marvin Eastman— $14,000 ($7,000 to show, $7,000 to win)
Terry Martin — $12,000
Eastman defeated Martin via unanimous decision

Rob Emerson — $16,000 ($8,000 to show, $8,000 to win)
Keita Nakamura — $5,000
Emerson defeated Nakamura via split decision

Keep in mind the salaries listed above do not include fight bonuses, sponsorships, percentages and other unofficial payments. It also does not include deductions for expenses such as insurance, taxes, etc.

For example, the UFC often hands out extra cash for “Fight of the Night,” “Knockout of the Night” and “Submission of the Night.” To check out these figures for UFC 81 go here.

The total base fighter payroll for UFC 81 was $892,000.

UFC 81 results coverage and LIVE fight commentary for ‘Breaking Point’

UFC 81 Results

UFC 81: “Breaking Point” is set for Saturday, February 2 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The Super Bowl weekend special will air on pay-per-view (PPV) at 10 p.m. ET with the main card action. And of course, MMAmania.com will provide LIVE fight-by-fight, round-by-round coverage at this time.

In addition, we will post quick results of the prelim action at around 7:30 p.m. ET.

Here’s the complete line up:

Main event:

Antonio Rodrigo “Minotauro” Nogueira (30-4- 1) vs. Tim Sylvia (24-3) for interim UFC Heavyweight Championship

Main card (televised):

Hvywt.: Frank Mir (10-3) vs. Brock Lesnar (1-0)
185 lbs.: Nate Marquardt (25-7-2) vs. Jeremy Horn (79-16-5)
185 lbs.: Alan Belcher (11-3) vs. Ricardo Almeida (8-2)

Undercard (May not be broadcast):

155 lbs.: Tyson Griffin (10-1) vs. Gleison Tibau (15-4)
170 lbs.: Chris Lytle (24-15-5) vs. Kyle Bradley (13-4)
185 lbs.: Terry Martin (16-3) vs. Marvin Eastman (14-7-1)
185 lbs.: David Heath (7-2) vs. Tim Boetsch (6-1)
155 lbs.: Keita Nakamura (14-2-2) vs. Rob Emerson (6-6)

At this point the co feature of the evening — Frank Mir vs. Brock Lesnar — has got me incredibly intrigued. There’s just no telling what is going to happen during that fight — Lesnar is raw and powerful and Mir is experienced and inconsistent.

How will this one unfold?

We can’t wait to find out, as well as check out the battle between former UFC heavyweight champion, Sylvia, and former Pride FC heavyweight champion, Minotauro Noguiera.

It’s going to get real interesting … and it’s all just one week away.

UFC 78 injuries and medical suspensions

UFC 78 medical Suspensions
Payback is a bitch … at least if you’re Joe Doerksen.

Middleweight Ed Herman cracked the orbital bone on Doerksen’s face with a knee during the first round of their 185-pound scrap at UFC 78: “Validation” on Saturday, November 17 from the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J. To his credit “El Dirte” persevered through the pain until he was stopped with a crushing hook in the opening seconds of round three.

With the win “Short Fuse” avenges a loss from earlier in his career and Doerksen now has some time (at least 60 days) to figure out his next step — he’s on a two-fight skid.

The injury to Doerksen tops the list of injuries and medical suspensions that MMAmania.com (www.mmamania.com) just received from the New Jersey State Athletic Control Board (NJSACB). The only other fighter to appear on the official report is Akihiro Gono (wrist). Ghono was victorious in his Octagon debut, submitting the much taller Tamdan “Barncat” McCrory in the second round via armbar.

Chris Lytle did not appear on the report nor did he receive a suspension from NJSACB. This is a bit bizarre considering the fight was stopped before the start of the third round because of cuts to the eyes of “Lights Out.”

Got a lot of questions in the stands the other night about the “new” referees. In short, familiar faces such as “Big” John McCarthy, Herb Dean, Steve Mazzagatti and others had the night off. We didn’t catch the pay-per-view broadcast; therefore, apologies if this is redundant. However, the NJSACB was responsible for staffing the referees that night and chose to go with Dan Miragliotta and Kevin Mulhall — both of whom are not “new.”

UFC 78: Fighter paydays and salaries for ‘Validation’

We’re not going to get to see them, according to Nicholas Lembo, Counsel for the New Jersey State Athletic Control Board (NJSACB).

Other states such as Nevada, California and Ohio, among others, often publish the fighter purses as a matter of public record following mixed martial arts (MMA) events. The NJSACB, however, cites confidentially concerns as the reason it has never released numbers nor will it for UFC 78: “Validation” this past weekend.

Remember that the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation, too, would not release the fighter payouts after UFC 69: “Shootout” in Houston on April 7, 2006.

However, during the post-fight press conference UFC President Dana White did announce individual bonuses for select bouts on the nine-fight card.

Here are the awards:

Fight of the Night: Thiago Alves vs. Chris Lytle ($55,000 each)
Knockout of the Night: Ed Herman ($55,000)
Submission of the Night: Akihiro Gono ($55,000)

Of course, these individual bonuses are in addition to the base salaries agreed upon in the fighters’ contracts (The same base salaries the NJSACB will not release).

UFC 78: “Validation” took place at the Prudential Center in Newark, N..J., on Saturday, November 17. For blow-by-blow, round-by-round coverage of the main card action click here. For a recap of the pay-per-view (PPV) event peep this.
