Corey Hill vs. Justin Buchholz UFC 86 fight in the works

Corey Hill vs Justin Buchholz UFC 86
Lightweights Corey Hill (2-0) and Justin Buchholz (7-2) are in talks to clash at UFC 86 on July 5 in Las Vegas, Nevada, according to the rumors section over at MMAWeekly.com.

Hill — the lanky and likable contestant from season five of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) — most recently stopped Joe Veres via technical knockout in his Octagon debut at UFC Fight Night 12 back in January. The 6′ 4″ Miletich-trained fighter will look to make it two in a row agains the Alaskan native.

Buchholz began his career with the Alaska Fight Championships and eventually migrated to warmer surroundings in Hawaii. He was on a nice four-fight win streak before meeting up with Matt Wiman in his Octagon debut at UFC Fight Night 12 — he was choked out in less than three minutes.

He’ll definitely have his hands full with Hill — he’s a freak to be be competing at 155 pounds and be so tall.

UFC Light Heavyweight Champion, Quinton “Rampage” Jackson, and number one contender, Forrest Griffin, will headline the UFC 86 pay-per-view (PPV) event that also features a slew of American Top Team fighters.

185 lbs.: Patrick Cote (184) vs. Drew McFedries (185)

155 lbs.: Matt Wiman (155) vs. Justin Buchholz (155)

*Note: Fighters are allowed to weigh one pound more than the division limit in non-title fights.

There should be a video highlight package of the UFC Fight Night 12 weigh-in available soon, which we include in this post as soon as possible.

Reminder: The televised portion of the SpikeTV special begins Wednesday, January 23, at 9 p.m. ET. We will provide LIVE blow-by-blow, round-by-round coverage of the main card action at this time when the event begins to air from The Pearl at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas.

UFC Fight Night 12 quick results, however, will begin to flow earlier than that here at MMAmania.com at about 7:30 p.m. ET with the prelim fights.

Feel free to hit us up before, during and after the show for some good discussion and coverage — it should be a nice night of FREE mixed martial arts (MMA) action.

UFC Quick Quote: Corey Hill wants to be Anderson Silva

Corey Hill

“I just hope that the fans see the potential we see down here in Iowa. I want them to see the explosiveness of this new threat in the lightweight division. There are a lot of great guys out there and I’m still far away from where we’re trying to go, but we’re looking for me to be the Anderson Silva of the lightweights. There’s not that standout, terrible guy that everybody’s afraid of, and I essentially want to be that guy.”

– Popular contestant on season five of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF), Corey Hill, tells UFC.com that he aspires to one day be a devastating force in the lightweight division much like champion Anderson Silva is in the middleweight class today. The 6′4″ beanstalk is set to make his official Octagon debut against Joe Veres next week at UFC Fight Night 12 on January 23 from The Pearl at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas, Nevada.

UFC Fight Night 12: Corey Hill vs. Joe Veres

corey hill vs joe veres at ufc fight night 12
Corey Hill (1-0) will make his Octagon debut against Joe Veres (4-2) at UFC Fight Night 12 on January 23. Ken Pavia — the manager for Veres — confirmed the booking in a recent post on the UnderGround Forum.

Hill has not competed since his stint on season five of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF), losing to eventual 155-pound tournament winner Nate Diaz via submission (triangle choke) in the quarterfinals. Because of his on-screen personality, rawness and physical attributes (he’s 6’4”), Hill is one of the more intriguing prospects to emerge from the TUF series.

And he only has one professional mixed martial arts fight to his credit (he fibbed his way onto the show, declaring that he has four wins against zero defeats). Remember, Hill was supposed to fight at TUF 5 Finale in June; however, he suffered a rib injury during that forced him off the card.

Veres actually fought on that same card (UFN 11) against Gray Maynard … for less than 10 seconds. Nine, to be precise. The three-time NCAA Division II All-American from Ashland University never got the chance to demonstrate his wrestling skills — or anything else for that matter.

He’ll look to change that against Hill during the SpikeTV special.

Ultimate Fight Night 12 Shaping Up

Today, MMA Junkie broke the news that two more fights have been set for UFC’s Ultimate Fight Night 12 on January 23. TUF 5 participant Corey Hill will be making his UFC debut against Joe Veres. Gray Maynard, another TUF 5 participant, will possibly be squaring-off against Matt Grice. The Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino of Hollywood, Florida will be playing host to the event.

– Nobody knows what to expect from Corey Hill, as it will be his second fight, and first professional fight since November of 2006. Hill won via KO in 34-seconds in the first round against Stryder Fann at Kickdown Classic 31.

– Joe Veres was on the wrong end of a 9-second KO at the hands of Gray Maynard at UFC’s Ultimate Fight Night 11 in September.

– Gray Maynard, obviously, is coming off a KO victory against Joe Veres.

– Matt Grice is coming off a split-decision victory against Jason Black at UFC 77 in October. Grice showed off impressive ground-and-pound and solid submission defense in the bout. He was, however, saved by the bell in the famous high-paced second round.

Rumored UFN 12 Fight Card thus far:

Mike Swick vs. Josh Burkman
Corey Hill vs. Joe Veres
Alberto Crane vs. Kurt Pellegrino
Thiago Tavares vs. Michihiro Omigawa
Patrick Cote vs. Drew McFedries
Nate Diaz vs. Alvin Robinson
Gray Maynard vs. Matt Grice
Cole Miller vs. Jeremy Stephens
Matt Wiman vs. Justin Buchholz

If all of these fights end up getting inked, this looks to be like one of the better UFN fight cards. More news to come as this all becomes official.

Corey Hill to return at UFC Fight Night 12 (Exclusive)

Corey Hill

Former contestant on season five of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) and 155-pound beanstalk, Corey Hill, will make his UFC debut Wednesday, January 23 at 9 p.m. ET on SpikeTV.

No opponent has been named at this time. In addition, no venue has been announced for the show.

Not Earth-shattering news; however, we get a lot of messages about what happened to him and what’s up next since he did not compete during the TUF 5 Finale. Remember: He did sustain an injury after the competition that kept him out of action perhaps longer than expected.

Our conversation was short because I bumped into him right before the weigh-ins for UFC 78: “Validation” were about to start. He was real cool and we’ll more than likely catch up with him before his fight in two months.

(It was actually his first UFC event — pretty odd to hear.)

Anyway, if you have any questions or want us to find anything out feel free to leave some suggestions in the comments section below and we’ll consider them.

More details to follow soon.

UFC News & Notes: Lauzon’s next opponent; Quarry back on TV; Fisher’s next fight; and more!

Lots of stuff and little time. You know the drill:

– In case you missed it, MMAjunkie.com (formerly UFCjunkie.com) reported the other day that Jason Reinhardt is claiming his next match will be at UFC 78 in Newark against Joe Lauzon. It looks like Joe and Karo Parisyan will be on the same card after all.

– The guys at Junkie also broke the news the other day that the match between Pete Sell vs. Nate Quarry scheduled for UFC Fight Night 11 on Sept. 19 has been bumped up to the televised portion of the card. The match replaces the bout that was to have taken place between Jonathan Goulet and Mike Swick. Goulet is still expected to appear on the preliminary portion of the card against Dustin Hazelett.

Junkie is also reporting that Corey Hill has opt of a joining Matt Hughes’ new gym in Illinois. Man, when is that guy going to finally make his UFC debut and get his career rolling?

– Spencer Fisher has left a message on his MySpace page that his next UFC fight could be in November. Fisher was scratched from the UFN 11 card after contracted staph infection.
