Seven Bloody Awesome MMA Blood Baths

7. Randy Couture vs. Gabriel Gonzaga

The headlining fight from UFC 74: Respect won’t be placed on anyone’s “most exciting list” since it was pretty much just Gonzaga leaning against and bleeding on Randy Couture for 2 1/2 rounds. But Gonzo’s nose geyser made for a memorably crimson octagon.

6. Pat Smith vs. Scott Morris

During UFC 2, Scott Morris dove in and attached himself to Pat Smith’s torso — in prime position to get the shit pounded out of him. We lost count at the amount of elbows Morris ate, but did notice the pieces of bloody pulp flying from his face before Big John called it. This was Morris’s first and only professional MMA event.

5. Jon Koppenhaver vs. Jared Rollins

In the TUF 6 finale’s Fight of the Night, War Machine and J-Roc beat and bled on one other, painting the canvas Jackson Pollack-style along the way. It looked like J-Rock would take it after he staggered Koppenhaver with a knee, preceded by a barrage of power elbows. But somehow an exhausted War Machine found enough in his tank to reverse it and have Steve Mazzagatti stop the fight.

UFC 81 medical suspensions from NSAC for ‘Breaking Point’

UFC 81 medical suspensionsThe Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) recently issued the medical suspensions from UFC 81: “Breaking Point” that took place this past weekend on February 2 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas.

To read the official report click here.

Most of the fighters escaped serious injuries with the exception of David Heath, who sustained a broken nose thanks to all those Tim Boetsch knees in the clinch … not to mention the insane ragdoll toss technical knockout.

Here’s the full skinny:

Antonio Rodrigo “Minotauro” Nogueira — “Big Nog” is suspended until March 2, 2008 and there’s no contact allowed until February 24, 2008.

Frank Mir – “The Baddest Man on the Planet” is suspended until March 2, 2008, with a scalp laceration and there’s no contact allowed until February 24, 2008.

Kyle Bradley — He is suspended until March 19, 2008, with right facial lacerations and

David Heath — He must clear a nasal fracture with a physician prior to returning to action or no contest until August 1, 2008. The quickest he can fight again with medical clearance is April 3, 2008, and there’s no contact allowed until March 19, 2008.

Marvin Eastman – “The Beastman” is suspended until March 2, 2008, with a right upper eyelid laceration and there’s no contact allowed until February 24, 2008.

Keita Nakamura — He is suspended suspended until March 18, 2008, and there’s no contact allowed until March 2, 2008.

Just a quick reminder: Fighters often return to action much quicker once doctors give them the green light. The lengthy suspensions are just a precaution in most cases.

For this specific set of fighters, however, it appears that only Heath will require medical clearance prior to competing again.

No surprise, Brock Lesnar was the top earner of the night, raking in a quarter-million dollars for his 90-second submission loss to Frank Mir. He could have pocketed another $200,000 with a win in his Octagon debut.

Antonio Rodrigo “Minotauro” Nogueira took home a nice chuck of change ($200,000) for his stoppage of Tim Sylvia, and Nate Marquardt didn’t make out too bad, either, with his convincing win over Jeremy Horn.

Here are all the UFC 81 payouts:

Rob Emerson — $16,000 ($8,000 to show, $8,000 to win)
Keita Nakamura — $5,000

Keep in mind the salaries listed above do not include fight bonuses, sponsorships, percentages and other unofficial payments. It also does not include deductions for expenses such as insurance, taxes, etc.

For example, the UFC often hands out extra cash for “Fight of the Night,” “Knockout of the Night” and “Submission of the Night.” To check out these figures for UFC 81 go here.

The total base fighter payroll for UFC 81 was $892,000.

UFC 81 results coverage and LIVE fight commentary for ‘Breaking Point’

UFC 81 Results

UFC 81: “Breaking Point” is set for Saturday, February 2 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The Super Bowl weekend special will air on pay-per-view (PPV) at 10 p.m. ET with the main card action. And of course, MMAmania.com will provide LIVE fight-by-fight, round-by-round coverage at this time.

In addition, we will post quick results of the prelim action at around 7:30 p.m. ET.

Here’s the complete line up:

Main event:

Antonio Rodrigo “Minotauro” Nogueira (30-4- 1) vs. Tim Sylvia (24-3) for interim UFC Heavyweight Championship

Main card (televised):

Hvywt.: Frank Mir (10-3) vs. Brock Lesnar (1-0)
185 lbs.: Nate Marquardt (25-7-2) vs. Jeremy Horn (79-16-5)
185 lbs.: Alan Belcher (11-3) vs. Ricardo Almeida (8-2)

Undercard (May not be broadcast):

155 lbs.: Tyson Griffin (10-1) vs. Gleison Tibau (15-4)
170 lbs.: Chris Lytle (24-15-5) vs. Kyle Bradley (13-4)
185 lbs.: Terry Martin (16-3) vs. Marvin Eastman (14-7-1)
185 lbs.: David Heath (7-2) vs. Tim Boetsch (6-1)
155 lbs.: Keita Nakamura (14-2-2) vs. Rob Emerson (6-6)

At this point the co feature of the evening — Frank Mir vs. Brock Lesnar — has got me incredibly intrigued. There’s just no telling what is going to happen during that fight — Lesnar is raw and powerful and Mir is experienced and inconsistent.

How will this one unfold?

We can’t wait to find out, as well as check out the battle between former UFC heavyweight champion, Sylvia, and former Pride FC heavyweight champion, Minotauro Noguiera.

It’s going to get real interesting … and it’s all just one week away.

UFC 81: David Heath vs. Tim Boetsch (not Anthony Ruiz) Update

david heath tim botesch ufc 81
David Heath (7-2) will take on last minute replacement Tim Boetsch (6-1) — not Anthony Ruiz (20-10) as previously reported — in a light heavyweight bout at UFC 81: “Breaking Point” on Saturday, February 2, at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, according to UFC.com.

It appears that the MMAWeekly.com report that Ruiz would step in for the injured Tomasz Drwal was either premature or incorrect (or both).

Drwal had to withdraw from the contest with a knee injury sustained while preparing for the fight. This report is a bit peculiar because it contradicts a statement from the UFC just yesterday that the SuperBowl weekend show would “carry on” with only eight match ups.

However, it appears as if the situation has changed within the last 24 hours.

Boetsch most recently dropped a unanimous decision to the super tough Vladimir Matyushenko at the International Fight League (IFL) 2007 Semifinals. Matyushenko went on to defeat Alex Schoenauer to become the first light heavyweight champion in the history of the organization.

Heath will look to erase the horrible memories of his last fight when he was choked unconscious during his last fight against Renato “Babalu” Sobral at UFC 74: “Respect” in August 2007.

The controversial result led to the ouster of the Brazilian veteran and to Heath’s second straight loss — he dropped a unanimous decision to Lyoto Machida at UFC 70: “Nations Collide” earlier that same year.

UFC 81: Tomasz Drwal scratched from David Heath fight with knee injury

Polish light heavyweight Tomasz Drwal has sustained a knee injury during training and will be unable to compete against David Heath at UFC 81: “Breaking Point” on February 2 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.

With the SuperBowl weekend pay-per-view (PPV) event just  two weeks away, no middleweights are available to fill-in on such short notice. Therefore, the show will go on with just eight fights.

Here’s the full snip from UFC.com:

“A knee injury has forced light heavyweight Tomasz Drwal to withdraw from his February 2nd bout with David Heath on the UFC 81 card in Las Vegas.  No replacement will be made for this fight, and UFC 81, which is headlined by the interim UFC heavyweight title fight between Tim Sylvia and Antonio Rodrigo ‘Minotauro’ Nogueira, and the UFC debut of Brock Lesnar against Frank Mir, will carry on with eight bouts.”

Drwal dropped his Octagon debut to Thiago Silva at UFC 75: “Champion vs. Champion” via technical knockout in a spirited effort back in September 2006.

It’s too bad the “Gorilla” is on the sidelines — he’s got a lot of talent and heart, which would have made for a nice undercard match up.

UFC 81: David Heath vs. Tomasz Drwal

Heath Drwal UFC
David Heath (7-2) and Tomasz Drwal (14-2) will meet in a light heavyweight clash at UFC 81: “Breaking Point” on February 2, 2008, according to MMABlog.pl.

Heath was originally penciled in to fight undefeated IFL sensation, Andre Gusmao. However, according to this report, the IFL opted to lock him into a deal that ensures the talented Brazilian will not compete inside the Octagon … at least not in 2008.

Oh well.

Heath will look to pull his record inside the Octagon above .500 against the Polish “Gorilla.” He was choked unconscious during his last fight against Renato “Babalu” Sobral at UFC 74: “Respect” in August.

The controversial result led to the ouster of the Brazilian veteran and to Heath’s second straight loss — he dropped a unanimous decision to Lyoto Machida at UFC 70: “Nations Collide” earlier in 2007.

Drwal was stopped in his Octagon debut against top-ranked 205-pound standout, Thiago Silva, at UFC 75: “Champion vs. Champion” back in September via second-round technical knockout (strikes).

It was a spirited effort that should put Heath on notice. In addition, Drwal was on a tear before the Silva loss, racking up 13 straight wins in Europe against decent competition.

UFC 81: David Heath vs. Andre Gusmao

david heath vs andre gusmao ufc 81
David Heath (7-2) will look to pull his record inside the Octagon above .500 when he meets up with UFC newcomer Andre Gusmao (5-0) at UFC 81: “Breaking Point” on February 2 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The light heavyweight bout was just added to the MMAWeekly.com rumors section.

Heath was choked unconscious during his last fight against Renato “Babalu” Sobral at UFC 74: “Respect” in August. The controversial result led to the ouster of the Brazilian veteran and to Heath’s second straight loss — he dropped a unanimous decision to Lyoto Machida at UFC 70: “Nations Collide” earlier this year.

Gusmao is an undefeated fighter who most recently competed in the International Fight League (IFL). In fact, his first round knockout win (knee) of Mike Ciesnolevicz sealed the victory for the Renzo Gracie-led New York Pitbulls at the 2007 Team Championship Final in September.

It’s certainly a fine addition to a stacked 205-pound division. Heath will certainly have his work cut out for him on SuperBowl weekend.
