Several prelim fights for UFC 87: ‘Seek and Destroy’ made official

ufc 87
Even though we already had the inside scoop, the UFC recently confirmed several bouts slated for the UFC 87: “Seek and Destroy” under card at the Target Center in Minneapolis, Minn., on August 9.

Lightweights Frankie Edgar and Hermes Franca will go toe-to-toe as expected, as well as heavyweights Cheick Kongo and Dan Evensen. In addition, Chris Wilson will tangle with Steve Bruno in a solid welterweight scrap.

The battle between The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 6 170-pound contestants – Ben Saunders and Jared Rollins — has also been scratched from UFC 86 and will now take place at UFC 87.

Of course, “Seek and Destroy” features the 170-pound world title fight between UFC Welterweight Champion Georges St. Pierre and number one contender, Jon Fitch. Lightweight Kenny Florian and Roger Huerta will also meet up in a 155-pound eliminator match to see who challenges BJ Penn next for his lightweight title.

And a Minnesota event wouldn’t be complete without its native MMA son, Brock Lesnar, who will look to get his first win inside the Octagon against the very dangerous and very experienced, Heath Herring.

According to NBCSports.com’s Mike Chiapetta, lightweight fighter Hermes Franca could return to the UFC as early as August 9 during UFC 87 at the Target Center in Minneapolis, MN. The report indicates that there are plans to possibly match Franca up with Frankie Edgar. FiveOuncesOfPain.com has learned that the match is not yet signed, but all [...]

Frank Edgar vs Hermes Franca UFC 87 fight in the works

ufc 87 frank edgar hermes franca
Hermes Franca (18-6) — who has been on the shelf because of a 12-month suspension — will return to competition against Frank Edgar (8-1) at UFC 87: “Seek and Destroy” at the Target Center in Minneapolis, Minn., on August 9, according to NBCSports.com.

Franca was popped for having a banned substance in his system (steroids) after his unanimous decision loss to then-lightweight champion, Sean Sherk, at UFC 73: “Stacked” in July 2007. He owned up to the mistake and was suspended and fined by the California State Athletic Commission (CSAC).

It was later revealed that Franca asked to be released from his contract because he wanted to compete elsewhere. The organization granted his request; however, Franca failed to realize that if he did fight while serving a suspension that he would risk getting licensed to fight again within the United States.

If the report is accurate then it appears that Franca and the UFC have once again come to terms on a new deal or simply resurrected the old contract.

Prior to the loss and suspension, Franca was among the hottest 155-pound finders in the sport. The former WEC lightweight champion had an eight-fight win streak snapped. And all of those wins were finishes via submission, knockout or technical knockout.

For his part, Edgar will look to rebound from the first loss of his career at the hands of Gray Maynard at UFC Fight Night 13 back in April. It was a hard-fought unanimous decision loss, during which “The Answer” had no answers for Maynard’s size advantage and successful takedowns.

Edgar was among the top contenders in the division before the loss, getting the best of Spencer Fisher, Mark Bocek and Tyson Griffin inside the Octagon.

This is a nice match up on a card that is shaping up nicely. It will be interesting to see how Franca handles the wrestling skills of Edgar — something he had trouble with in his bout against Sherk.

Gray Maynard broken hand, out 4 to 6 weeks

Gray Maynard

Gray Maynard is on the shelf for four to six weeks because of a broken hand sustained during his lightweight bout against Frank Edgar at UFC Fight Night 13 at the Broomfield Event Center in Broomfield, Colo., on April 2.

“The Bully” used a distinct size advantage to dominate the undefeated New Jersey native en route to an impressive unanimous decision win.

It’s an achievement that raised the stock significantly for the former contestant on The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 5 in the deep 155-pound class. In fact, it’s possible that he will next lock horns with Nate Diaz sometime in 2008.

Diaz submitted Maynard in the semifinals of the 16-man tournament, going on to claim the championship with a technical knockout win over Manny Gamburyan in the finals. Both fighters have shined since their stints in the mixed martial arts reality series.

Let’s hope Gray gets well soon and we see the rematch. If not, Tyson Griffin has been discussed as possible next opponent for Diaz.

Either way … win-win. Both are solid match ups.

UFC Quick Quote: Frank Edgar focused on winning … and Gray Maynard

Frank Edgar

“I’m definitely one of the players in the weight class. It might depend on the outcome of this fight and a couple of other fights in the UFC. The 155-pound class is definitely one of the most stacked in the UFC…. Every fight is important for position. If you lose, you’re pretty much out of the picture for a while. It (the competition for a title shot) is pretty vicious. You’re only as good as your last fight…. You get better by winning. If you win, everything takes care of itself. You get what you want to get out of it. I know this is going to be a tough fight. He (Maynard) is big, strong, has heavy hands and comes from a good camp.”

– UFC lightweight contender Frank Edgar tells his hometown rag, The Asbury Park Press, that his fight next week against Gray Maynard at UFC Fight Night 13 is important if he wants to remain in the 155-pound title chase. In fact, he says that every fight is equally important … and he’s right — especially in a division so stacked. I wasn’t too thrilled when this match up was first announced, but it’s grown on me over time. Hopefully, it’s an action-packed, fast-paced back-and-forth war.

UFC Fight Night 13: Frank Edgar vs. Gray Maynard

Frank Edgar vs Gray Maynard

Rising lightweight Frank Edgar (8-0) will look to continue his ascent to the top of the 155-pound division when he takes on The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 5 alum, Gray Maynard (4-0), at UFC Fight Night 13 on April 2 from the Broomfield Event Center in Broomfield, Colo.

FiveOuncesOfPain.com recently confirmed the rumored match up, which adds another quality bout to the already loaded SpikeTV special event.

Edgar is undefeated in his professional mixed martial arts career and in three fights inside the Octagon. “The Answer” holds impressive wins over Tyson Griffin, Mark Bocek and most recently, Spencer Fisher.

Maynard has also competed three times in the Octagon since his stint on TUF 5, defeating Joe Veres and Dennis Siver. He was also involved in the bizarre simultaneous knockout/tapout in the fight with Rob Emerson at the TUF 5 Finale that resulted in a “No Contest.”

This is certainly a step up in competition for Maynard and what could be considered a step down for Edgar. Both fighters possess strong wrestling backgrounds, but overall, Edgar is better at everything.
