(In Trigg’s defense, he had just gotten out of the pool.)
Sengoku’s “Fourth Battle” went down today in Saitama, Japan, featuring the long-awaited returns of Takanori Gomi and Frank Trigg, and the first round of their lightweight grand prix. In a non-tourney main event bout, Gomi faced 5-1 Korean DEEP vet Seung Hwan Bang — who should have been steamrolled by the legendary “Fireball Kid” — but Bang hung in for all three rounds. Eventually, Gomi’s accurate striking and control of the fight’s pace convinced the judges to unanimously give him the win. Trigg’s opponent was Makoto Takimoto, a judoka and PRIDE vet who came into the fight with a 4-4 MMA record, and as with Gomi, the fight was a little more difficult than it should have been. Trigg dominated the standup and inflicted major damage from top positions on the ground, but Takimoto nearly caught Twinkle Toes in a kimura in the second round, and spent a lot of the third on top; still, it wasn’t enough to prevent the judges from giving Trigg the decision after the fight went the distance.
The first round of Sengoku’s lightweight tournament held some surprises as three big names were unceremoniously bounced out of the competition. The HIT Squad’s Clay French was tapped in 31 seconds via achilles lock by former Pancrase mainstay Satoru Kitaoka, and jiu-jitsu ace Rodrigo Damm also suffered a first-round submission at the hands of Eiji Mitsuoka. Former IFL lightweight champ Ryan Schultz, who was the biggest favorite to win his first GP match, got his lights put out by a superman-punch from Cage Force champ Mizuto Hirota in the second round of their fight. Full results after the jump; videos to come.
Main Event Bouts:
Takanori Gomi def. Seung Hwan Bang via unanimous decision
Frank Trigg def. Makoto Takimoto via unanimous decision
Lightweight Grand Prix Opening Round:
Mizuto Hirota def. Ryan Schultz via KO (superman punch), 4:25 of round 2
Kazunori Yokata def. Bojan Kosednar via unanimous decision
Eiji Mitsuoka def. Rodrigo Damm via submission (rear naked choke), 3:13 of round 1
Satoru Kitaoka def. Clay French via submission (achilles lock), 0:31 of round 1
Undercard:
Valentijn Overeem def. Yoshihiki Takahashi via KO (flying knee), 2:42 of round 1
Moise Rimbon def. Peter Graham via submission (rear naked choke), 0:42 of round 2
Yang Dong Yi def. Pawel Nastula via TKO, 2:15 of round 2

Frank Trigg is a one-man industry. How many other fighters can claim to train in a gym they own, show up to fight in a shirt they designed, then talk about it the next day on their own radio show? In this exclusive interview, the man behind Triggonomics, TAGG Radio, the R1 Training Center, a handful of truly bizarre TV appearances — as well as some legendary beatdowns in the UFC, PRIDE and Icon Sport — gives us the “Twinkle Toes” perspective on fighter branding, reality television, and why he would kick Robbie Lawler’s ass in a rematch.

CAGEPOTATO.COM: Let’s get this out of the way first: Who, where, and when are you fighting next?
FRANK TRIGG: I don’t know yet. I thought I was going to have something set up and ready to announce this week, but we don’t have anything finalized.
But you are still actively pursuing your fight career, right? It’s not like your five other jobs are getting in the way…
Absolutely, I’m trying to get as many fights as I can. I was trying to be in the DREAM middleweight tournament, but it didn’t work out.
You told MMAJunkie that doing that tournament wouldn’t benefit your brand. What exactly did you mean by that?
That’s really what all of us are trying to do — Chuck Liddell, Roger Huerta, Georges St. Pierre — all of us are trying to brand ourselves to a big enough name that we can make money outside of the fight world, and I have to make choices on what’s going to help me accomplish that. Doing commentating for TNA Wrestling helps me as a brand — it pushes me forward, it gets me in front of a different demographic and increases the size of my network. And when you’re with an organization that’s not going to do that for you, whatever level you’re at, it doesn’t help.
DREAM was waiting and screwing around, and I was trying to figure out whether or not the tournament was going to be shown in America on HDNet. They finally agreed to a deal like three days before the event, and I thought “that’s just stupid, they should have had this stuff done a long time ago.†The way that they’re running the organization, it just wasn’t going to be any good for me in trying to get my brand out there.
Do you think you’ll still try to deal with DREAM? Their fight-booking process seems disorganized at times, to say the least.
I would have gone back to them, but somebody sent me a link to a story in the Japanese press where they said I was a liar and that I agreed to do the tournament but backed out. I’m not going to work with someone who’s going to call me a liar. It’s not gonna happen.

(“We’re here to pick up your daughter.”)
No, it won’t be a re-match of their BodogFight brawl — on Friday, Fedor Emelianenko announced on his website that he would indeed be facing Tim Sylvia on July 19th in the United States, a match that was somewhat called into question when Vadim Finkelchtein started going on about unsigned contracts. Fedor also claims he’ll be fighting in October (date/location/opponent TBA) and New Year’s Eve in Japan (opponent TBA).
Matt Lindland added another piece to the puzzle during HDNet’s SportFight XXII broadcast on Friday night, confirming that he’ll also be competing on the July 19th card, and that it will take place in Dallas under the Affliction banner. Though an opponent for Lindland has yet to be named, The Law named Murilo Bustamante (who choked out Lindland at UFC 37) and David Terrell (who knocked out Lindland at UFC 49) as guys he’d like to fight. According to FiveOunces, Andrei Arlovski, Josh Barnett, Ben Rothwell, and Aleksander Emelianenko are rumored to be fighting on the Affliction card as well.
In unrelated fight-booking news, Frank Trigg has denied earlier reports that he’s signed to participate in DREAM’s middleweight tournament. Said Trigg:
“I haven’t heard anything from [DREAM] in about a week and a half. We started talking about a month ago, but lately, there’s been no communication…We have no contract, and we have no numbers we’re even close to agreeing on. Like I mentioned on TAGG, my wife is very pregnant and can’t fly. She’d miss the whole tournament, and that’s a big deal to take a fight without her there by my side.”

DREAM has updated the official card for their second event (April 29th; Saitama, Japan), with seven fights of the upcoming middleweight tournament already locked down. The biggest surprise is the addition of Frank Trigg, who will be taking on Brazilian Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza (7-1). Trigg, who we consider to be the #9 middleweight in the world, most recently competed at HDNet Fights: Reckless Abandon (12/15/07), where he submitted Edwin Dewees in the first round. The other six fights booked for DREAM’s middleweight GP are:
Denis Kang vs. Gegard Mousasi
Ikuhisa “Minowaman” Minowa vs Kin Taiei
Kazushi Sakuraba (depending on traffic) vs. Andrews Nakahara
Kiyoshi Tamura vs. Masakatsu Funaki
Magomed Sultanakhmadov vs. Zelg Galesic
Yoon Dong Sik vs. Shungo Oyama
Other fighters rumored to fill out the eighth and final tourney fight include Yoshihiro Akiyama (who has been battling injuries), Daniel Acacio, Dae Won Kim, and Mamed Khalidov. DREAM.2 will also feature the do-over match between Shinya Aoki and Gesias Calvancante, to decide who will advance to round two of the lightweight GP on May 11th. In addition, GracieFighter.com is saying that Nick Diaz has verbally accepted a DREAM.2 fight against Marcelo Garcia, a former competitive grappler who lost his pro MMA debut last October at a K-1 HERO’s event. However, Garcia has reportedly backed out of the fight, and a new opponent may not be found for Diaz.

Kurt Angle. Samoa Joe. Frank Trigg?
Total Nonstop Action (TNA) is currently trying to woo the former UFC and PRIDE fighter to the land of make believe for a full-time announcing job according to Rajah.com.
Trigg (16-6) is scheduled to provide color commentary for the main event of the company’s upcoming Lockdown pay-per-view (PPV) on April 13.
“Twinkle Toes” has worked as an announcer for PRIDE in the past and co-hosted numerous MMA radio shows.
Interesting to note that WWE.com (who links to the Rajah report) doesn’t realize that Trigg is no longer a commentator for PRIDE.
Or that there is no longer a PRIDE organization.
You would think that a company so eager to whip out a gogoplata at Wrestlemania would be a little more in-tune with the current MMA scene.
I guess somebody over in new media ate one too many chairshots.

“This sport is about winning. The reason why everybody is on the Patriots’ jock right now is because they’re undefeated. Everybody is on the Dallas Cowboys’ jock because they only got one loss. People like winners, and that’s what happened with Hughes and Penn and how they got their success. My most famous fights are the ones I lost, the ones against Hughes and St. Pierre. Those fights are the reasons why people know me, but I lost those fights. Well, people can’t get behind a loser, so for me to get the same type of popularity here at HDNet Fights, (the plan) is to keep winning.”
-Former UFC welterweight contender and current HDNet Fights headliner Frank “Twinkle Toes” Trigg offers Sherdog.com a sobering perspective on success and failure in mixed martial arts.

HDNet Fights held a conference call on Wednesday afternoon to promote their next live telecast on Dec. 15 at the American Airlines Arena in Dallas, Texas.
Involved on the call were HDNet Fights president Andrew Simon, HDNet Fights matchmaker Guy Mezger, along with fighters Sean Salmon and Jason “Mayhem” Miller, who will be fighting each other in a clash of middleweight during the show’s co-main event. The other main event will feature Frank Trigg vs. Edwin Dewees.
Here’s a recap of the conference call:
- The rumors of Randy Couture joining the promotion were brought up. Mezger wasn’t real comfortable with the topic and said he wanted to focus on talking about the card. He said that if there was a way to get Couture on board at HDNet Fights that it would be “awesome.”
- Miller and Trigg have signed three-fight contracts that are non-exclusive. However, there are some restrictions when it comes to their exclusivity, such as they don’t want fighters that they’ve signed to multi-fight deals competing a month before they’re supposed to fight for HDNet Fights.
- 22-24 shows are planned for 2008. The number of shows will include live HDNet Fights cards as well as cards presented by their partners, such as the IFO and Ring of Combat. The plan is for HDNet Fights to hold their cards in Dallas during the next 12 months in order to build a fanbase and them start doing shows around the country. Pay-per-view is also an option they are looking at for the future. Also, titles could be introduced once they fill out their divisions and gain some traction.
- Mezger revealed during the conference call that their next show after the Dec. 15 event will be in February. Team Takedown standout and Masters of the Cage light heavyweight champion Jake Rosholt will be debuting for the promotion on that card. Mezger was asked if there was interest in the other three members of Team Takedown (Johny Hendricks, Shane Roller, and Eric Bradley) and he indicated that there was. He was very complementary to the team’s management and the fighters they’ve signed.

Quoteworthy:
“Gabriel Gonzaga put Ludlow on the mixed martial arts map. His manager, Marco Alvan, is trying to make sure it stays there. Alvan has added two renowned fighters to his Team Link stable, which already includes Gonzaga - a top heavyweight in the Ultimate Fighting Championship. Thiago Silva is 11-0 and will fight at next month’s “UFC 78″ in Newark, N.J., while Paulo Filho is the middleweight champion of UFC’s sister promotion - World Extreme Cagefighting.”
Interesting aside: In the article Filho confirms his rumored WEC 185-pound title bout against former UFC welterweight contender Frank Trigg on December 12. Good fight.

Frank Trigg co-hosts an Internet radio show every weekday at TaggRadio.com and one of his broadcast partners on the show, Gorgeous George, posted on 5 Oz. earlier in response to the story I did on the EliteXC conference call earlier this week. George wanted to clarify some of the comments Shields made in reference to a matchup between he and Trigg falling through for a card to be held in October in San Francisco.
I want to be fair to all sides and let everyone have their side of the story. I don’t want to bury George’s comments in the comment section of the original article so I thought I’d post his reaction to what I had reported earlier.
First, here’s what I wrote in regard to Shields:
- I asked Shields about his feud with Frank Trigg. He said that the match had been set for October in San Francisco and that both verbally agreed. When it came time to return contracts, Trigg never signed his and then wouldn’t answer his phone. Shields said he’s still open to the match but isn’t sure it’s worth pursuing right now.
- Someone asked a followup about the difference in weight class between Shields and Trigg. Shields said he’d be willing to fight at 185 if the offer is right. I am pretty sure he said the offer he had this time around wasn’t enough for him to fight Trigg at middleweight.
Here is what George had to say:
hey sam,
always look forward to your articles here or on junkie. one comment i wanted to make about the shields-trigg match in san fran. both jake and frank were on the gracie fighting champ card in miami that subsequently was cancelled. frank got hosed on that deal and decided he didn’t want to accept offers from smaller orgs without some sort of “retainer” or purse up front. the people in san fran were supposed to fly to la and take care of that with frank’s manager ricco and it never happened. therefore, trigg decided not to put himself in the same position where he could get burned. also, the contract said 175 when he clearly has stated he intends to stay at 185 for now. at the same time, jake has stated he would move up to 185 so that should never be an issue.
I think EliteXC should step up and make this match happen at 185 lbs. Shields already has said he’d be willing to do it if the offer was right.
