Several prelim fights for UFC 87: ‘Seek and Destroy’ made official

ufc 87
Even though we already had the inside scoop, the UFC recently confirmed several bouts slated for the UFC 87: “Seek and Destroy” under card at the Target Center in Minneapolis, Minn., on August 9.

Lightweights Frankie Edgar and Hermes Franca will go toe-to-toe as expected, as well as heavyweights Cheick Kongo and Dan Evensen. In addition, Chris Wilson will tangle with Steve Bruno in a solid welterweight scrap.

The battle between The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 6 170-pound contestants – Ben Saunders and Jared Rollins — has also been scratched from UFC 86 and will now take place at UFC 87.

Of course, “Seek and Destroy” features the 170-pound world title fight between UFC Welterweight Champion Georges St. Pierre and number one contender, Jon Fitch. Lightweight Kenny Florian and Roger Huerta will also meet up in a 155-pound eliminator match to see who challenges BJ Penn next for his lightweight title.

And a Minnesota event wouldn’t be complete without its native MMA son, Brock Lesnar, who will look to get his first win inside the Octagon against the very dangerous and very experienced, Heath Herring.

Danzig/Guida Out of UFC 87; Franca, Parisyan In?

From a recent blog post on MacDanzig.net:

Forget what you heard! Mac is NOT fighting at UFC 87, or in August at all! Mac will most likely fight in September, and the fight has not yet been signed.

It’s possible that Danzig’s reported matchup with Clay Guida at “Seek and Destroy” (August 9th, Minneapolis, MN) will simply be moved to a later event. We’ll update you when we know more. In the meantime, another compelling lightweight matchup may be added to the card that would take a bit of the sting off the Danzig/Guida loss.

NBC Sports is reporting that exiled former #1 contender Hermes Franca will return to the Octagon at UFC 87 against Frankie Edgar. Due to a positive steroid test, Franca was given a one-year suspension after his lightweight title fight against Sean Sherk at UFC 73; the suspension ends on July 5th. Franca resigned from the UFC in order to make money fighting outside of the U.S. — though decided against competing when he learned that doing so could jeopardize his chances of getting licensed here again — so it’s interesting that the UFC is welcoming him back with open arms. Could Dana White be planning a steroid-free rematch between Franca and Sean Sherk sometime in the future?

In other UFC 87 news, Karo Parisyan says he’s been booked to fight at the event. He was expected to face George Sotiropoulos, but the TUF 6 semi-finalist was forced to pull out of the match due to injury, and a replacement hasn’t been found yet. Parisyan was most recently defeated by Thiago Alves at UFC Fight Night 13 in April.

Report: Frankie Edgar vs. Hermes Franca could take place at UFC 87

According to NBCSports.com’s Mike Chiapetta, lightweight fighter Hermes Franca could return to the UFC as early as August 9 during UFC 87 at the Target Center in Minneapolis, MN. The report indicates that there are plans to possibly match Franca up with Frankie Edgar. FiveOuncesOfPain.com has learned that the match is not yet signed, but all [...]

Frank Edgar vs Hermes Franca UFC 87 fight in the works

ufc 87 frank edgar hermes franca
Hermes Franca (18-6) — who has been on the shelf because of a 12-month suspension — will return to competition against Frank Edgar (8-1) at UFC 87: “Seek and Destroy” at the Target Center in Minneapolis, Minn., on August 9, according to NBCSports.com.

Franca was popped for having a banned substance in his system (steroids) after his unanimous decision loss to then-lightweight champion, Sean Sherk, at UFC 73: “Stacked” in July 2007. He owned up to the mistake and was suspended and fined by the California State Athletic Commission (CSAC).

It was later revealed that Franca asked to be released from his contract because he wanted to compete elsewhere. The organization granted his request; however, Franca failed to realize that if he did fight while serving a suspension that he would risk getting licensed to fight again within the United States.

If the report is accurate then it appears that Franca and the UFC have once again come to terms on a new deal or simply resurrected the old contract.

Prior to the loss and suspension, Franca was among the hottest 155-pound finders in the sport. The former WEC lightweight champion had an eight-fight win streak snapped. And all of those wins were finishes via submission, knockout or technical knockout.

For his part, Edgar will look to rebound from the first loss of his career at the hands of Gray Maynard at UFC Fight Night 13 back in April. It was a hard-fought unanimous decision loss, during which “The Answer” had no answers for Maynard’s size advantage and successful takedowns.

Edgar was among the top contenders in the division before the loss, getting the best of Spencer Fisher, Mark Bocek and Tyson Griffin inside the Octagon.

This is a nice match up on a card that is shaping up nicely. It will be interesting to see how Franca handles the wrestling skills of Edgar — something he had trouble with in his bout against Sherk.

Franca: The UFC Forced Me to Take Steroids

HF

Well, basically.

On a recent airing of the Tagg Radio Network’s Lights Out Show, Hermes Franca discussed that little steroid misunderstanding he had last summer at UFC 73, where both him and his opponent Sean Sherk were busted for ‘roids after their lightweight title fight; Franca has subsequently been banned from competing in California until July 5th. Unlike Sean Sherk, who absolutely did not take steroids, Franca was apologetic about the situation and chalked it up to a “mistake,” but he did try to pin some of the blame on the pressure-cooker of being a UFC fighter:

When I was hurt, I got lost. I wanted to fight for the belt and make my dreams come true. But [UFC matchmaker] Joe Silva told me that I had to fight Sean Sherk at UFC 73 and there was no other way around it without him finding another opponent. A lot of guys in the division wouldn’t be able to fight, like Kenny Florian. I brought up Roger Huerta but Joe said that he wasn’t ready. So I took the steroids.

If you’re unfamiliar, Franca’s pre-fight injury situation is described here. To him, it was a choice between taking steroids and not being able to support his family; like many mixed martial artists, he lives fight-to-fight, financially speaking. And now with a one-year suspension preventing further income, Franca was recently forced to resign from the UFC so he could make money fighting overseas. To make things worse, the CSAC warned Franca that he would have to serve his one-year suspension if he ever planned on fighting in the U.S. again, so he’s basically like a wandering ghost at this point, fighting to survive and unable to return home. The irony is, if he went through the Sherk fight without chemical enhancement, even if he took an ugly loss, he would have probably picked up a win by disqualification — or at least a no-contest and another title shot — because Sherk also pissed dirty.

Anyway, there’s your daily insight into the ugly side of MMA. We’re going to go cry in our car for a while.

UFC grants Hermes Franca release from contract

Quoteworthy:

“After my fight [with Sean Sherk] i was suspended for a year,i could not fight in USA,so i got some calls to fight in Canada, england, japan etc … so i ask [UFC matchmaker] Joe Silva to finish my contract with UFC, i told him i need to fight to make money ,told him to please let me fight and finish my contract( i was out of focus) and his gently did it. So, i spoke with Mr. Armando Garcia, and he told me , if i do some fights out of USA i could not fight in USA anymore never. So i decide don’t fight and wait until july,So now i don’t have any contract, but of course i will try come back to the UFC( just if u guys wish hermes franca back again lol), or wait for another offer from another organization. That’s it. But i am doing good guys, really busy ,doing seminars in all over the world ,i am in canada now, and next week arizona, winsconsin, north carolina ,south carolina ,i am training with differents fighters and camps(marcelo garcia, pablo popovitch,B.J. penn ,marck bocek, etc…) Really nice to talk to you guys ,thank you to all my fans!!!!! “PEACE AND LOVE.”

Former number one UFC lightweight contender, Hermes Franca, a few days ago detailed his current situation since the loss to then division champion, Sean Sherk, at UFC 73: “Stacked” in July 2007 and his subsequent positive test for steroids after the bout. Franca was fined and suspended for 12 months because he did not appeal the decision. Sherk — who also tested positive for steroids after the bout — had his suspension reduced by the California State Athletic Commission (CSAC) to six months and is free to fight again. Franca has to wait until July or risk being unable to compete again in the United States — something he more than likely did not know when he asked to be released from the UFC.

CSAC nails down spooky date for Sean Sherk UFC 73 steroids appeal hearing

UFC Lightweight Champion Sean Sherk will go before the California State Athletic Commission (CSAC) on October 31 to plead his innocence to charges of steroid use, according to FightNetwork.com.

Sherk tested positive for an anabolic steroid agent known as “nandrolone” after his successful unanimous decision title defense against Hermes Franca at UFC 73: “Stacked” on July 7.

He claims that there is a mistake — even though both samples that he provided were tainted — and has hired a high-powered attorney, Howard Jacobs, to clear his name.

Here’s a snip:

“Sherk’s attorney … confirmed his legal team is investigating the lab documentation pertaining to urine specimens taken from his client. Jacobs also said Sherk’s supplements were being tested.”

The 155-pound champion and Octagon veteran has already been fined $2,500. Sherk also faces a one-year suspension and will be stripped of his title if the ruling is upheld.

It’s unfortunate that the hearing will take place on Halloween. That’s because prior to this situation Sherk was penciled in to fight BJ Penn at UFC 78 in Newark, N.J., on November 17.

With just two weeks between the hearing and the event, it’s safe to say that Sherk will not be competing in the Garden State. Penn, on the other hand, could still face Joe Stevenson — a match up that will likely happen to determine a new champion if the title is vacated.

However, Stevenson is recovering from a broken nose he suffered in his UFC 74 win over Kurt Pellegrino and is on medical suspension.

It just seems like this entire situation right now is an utter mess. And only time will determine how it all unfolds.

Hermes Franca: ‘I learned my lesson’ (Audio)

hermes franca steroids suspension
Maybe honesty isn’t necessarily the best policy — not for Hermes Franca, anyway.

The Brazilian UFC lightweight fighter came clean (unlike his drug test) after his loss to Sean Sherk at UFC 73: “Stacked” last month, admitting that he had used illegal steroids prior to the championship bout.

He was later fined and suspended from competition for one full year by the California State Athletic Commission (CSAC). In addition, he is banned from cornering fighters such as Kurt Pellegrino — his top student at The Armory training camp — during this time.

Meanwhile, during the same hearing before the CSAC professional boxer James Toney — who also tested positive for steroids in a recent fight — had his suspension reduced to six months.

Fair? Not according to this thread.

Perhaps the silver lining in all of this is that Franca isn’t complaining. He’s accepted his punishment and is taking it like a man.

Luke Thomas and his partner at WhoopAss Radio recently conducted an audio interview with Franca about the story behind his steroid use, the CSAC decision and the upcoming lightweight fight between Pellegrino and Joe Stevenson at UFC 74: “Respect” one week from today.

It’s interesting to hear the reason he resorted to taking steroids.

According to Franca, he approached the UFC about pulling out of the fight because of an ankle injury eight weeks prior to the event. Delaying the return of Sherk — who was out almost eight months rehabbing a shoulder injury — wasn’t something that the UFC was to keen on doing, however.

So, Franca used the steroids hoping that it would help his ankle heal faster and, at the very least, allow him to keep training.

Acceptable? Not one bit.

But, according to Franca, it’s the sad truth.

Franca’s suspension upheld; Sherk and Baroni’s appeals postponed

Damon Martin and Jeff Cain of MMAWeekly.com are reporting that Hermes Franca’s one-year suspension for testing positive for steroids at UFC 73 was upheld today by the California State Athletic Commission. Franca had requested a lighter sentence.

Also, individual requests by Phil Baroni and Sean Sherk to have their appeal hearings delayed until October were both granted by the commission.

Sherk tested positive at UFC 73 while Baroni tested positive for the June 22 show co-promoted by Strikeforce and EliteXC in San Jose.
