Quick Hits: MacDonald in for Day at UFC 88, ATT Shakeup, and More

(”The Athlete” is ready to get back after it.)

- Jason “Dooms” Day has been forced to pull out of his UFC 88 bout with fattie-turned-middleweight Jason Lambert because of a biceps injury, but those of you who are fans of seeing Lambert’s man-boobs in the Octagon needn’t worry. Jason “The Athlete” MacDonald is stepping in as a replacement for Day, despite the fact that he just went three rounds in a losing effort against Demian Maia at UFC 87. Good move for MacDonald. If you can’t win ‘em all, the next best way to keep the UFC happy is to fight ‘em all, especially when called upon on short notice.

- Poor Nate Quarry just can’t catch a break. After coming back from a nearly career-ending back injury only to be forced to chase Kalib Starnes in circles, Quarry has now been sidelined with an eye injury that is strangely not related to fighting. Apparently Quarry was at a party where people were hitting golf balls into the woods — like you do, just for kicks — and he accidentally walked into someone’s backswing. Despite breaking the Orbital Floor bone in his eye, Quarry is not seriously hurt, though he will be kept out of action for at least a few more months.

- American Top Team coach Andrei Benkei is leaving the squad due to “ideological disagreements” with head coach Ricardo Liborio. Benkei told Tatame that he’ll still work with several high profile ATT fighters like Thiago Alves and “Bigfoot” Silva, among others, but it’s been reported that Benkei disapproved of the way Liborio was turning ATT into “a big McDonald’s” by selling its name to karate gyms. For shame, Ricardo. Karate gyms? That’s the MMA gym equivalent of giving hand jobs in the Wal-Mart parking lot. You never need money that badly.

- It’s not MMA news, but it’s worth mentioning: Sumo wrestling has been rocked by a drug scandal. A totally lame drug scandal. Russian Sumo wrestler (they exist?) Soslan Aleksandrovich Gagloev was arrested for possessing a third of a gram of weed. According to CNN, it’s “enough to land him in prison on a diet of forced labor for five years if he’s convicted.” Five years for a third of a gram in Japan? Nick Diaz should really be informed about that before returning to fight for Dream again.

UFC 85 weigh-in results for ‘Bedlam’ PPV event in London; Thiago Alves misses weight

ufc 85 weigh-in
The official weigh-in results for UFC 85: “Bedlam” at the O2 Arena in London, England, are in.

And there’s some ridiculous news to report.

Thiago Alves came in super heavy at 174 pounds for his main event fight against Matt Hughes. He will not have to shed the extra poundage — he and Hughes have agreed to fight at a catchweight.

He’ll more than likely have to pay Hughes a percentage of his salary for the massive blunder and pay in the court of public opinion for the lack of professionalism.

Here are the official results:

170 lbs.: Matt Hughes (170) vs. Thiago Alves (174)
185 lbs.: Michael Bisping (184) vs. Jason Day (184)
185 lbs.: Nate Marquardt (185) vs. Thales Leites (185)
170 lbs.: Mike Swick (170) vs. Marcus Davis (170)
265 lbs.: Brandon Vera (228) vs. Fabricio Werdum (247)
185 lbs.: Martin Kampmann (186) vs. Jorge Rivera (185)
155 lbs.: Thiago Tavares (154.5) vs. Matt Wiman (155)
170 lbs.: Roan Carneiro (171) vs. Kevin Burns (170)
205 lbs.: Jason Lambert (205) vs. Luis Arthur Cane (204)
170 lbs.: Jess Liaudin (169) vs. Paul Taylor (169)
265 lbs.: Eddie Sanchez (244) vs. Antoni Hardonk (247)

*Note: Fighters are allowed to weigh one pound more than the division limit in non-title fights.

Remember that MMAmania.com will also provide LIVE round-by-round, blow-by-blow coverage of the main card action on fight afternoon, which is slated to air at 3 p.m. ET on pay-per-view (PPV) from the O2 Arena on Saturday, June 7.

Of course, the latest quick updates of the prelim bouts will begin to flow earlier than that at around 1:30 p.m. ET.

It’s going to be an entertaining afternoon of mixed martial arts action … check us out for all the pre, during and post-fight coverage you can handle.

Note that the UFC 85 PPV will re-air at 10 p.m. ET.

UFC 85 Ipecac Bet: Head-to-Head

UFC 85 picks

Ryan “Fightlinker” Harkness has cast his final picks in our UFC 85 ipecac bet rematch; you can check out his take on the Bedlam matchups here. I was a little nervous picking Hughes and Werdum to win because both matches could definitely go either way, but Ryan has set my mind at ease by picking Hughes and Werdum as well (though he picked them to end by stoppage, rather than my decision calls). Of course, there are some notable points of dispute. Such as…

Michael Bisping vs. Jason Day
I said: Bisping by storm.
Ryan said: “I’m all over Jason Day’s nuts. After watching him destroy Alan Belcher, I’m convinced that there’s no way Michael Bisping is gonna be able to take him out. Bisping nearly got taken out by Elvis Sinosic for god’s sake. So I anticipate one round of tenderization and then Bisping getting subbed out on top in the second.”

Marcus Davis vs. Mike Swick
I said: Davis in a wild one.
Ryan said: “Davis has been on an upswing and Swick has been on a downswing. But Marcus hasn’t faced the kind of opponents Swick has, and has turned into a cocky motherfucker to boot. I’m expecting Swick to come in with a smart plan: put him on his back and don’t give Davis a chance to use his hands. This fight is simply too important for Swick to try and trade.”

Jason Day ‘Count’ down to ‘Dooms’ day Michael Bisping UFC 85 fight (Part IV)

jason day

The grind is over.

Today was the last day of conditioning for my upcoming middleweight fight with Michael Bisping at the O2 Arena in London, England, on June 7. It is always a weird feeling to be done with the grind — all those weeks of intense training are done and now it is time to put it to the test.

I had an awesome last week of training. There were no snags … I just put my nose to the grindstone.

Today we pushed it the hardest I have ever gone in my circuit. It’s clear that I am in better shape than I was for the Alan Belcher fight at UFC 83: “Serra vs. St. Pierre” just this past April.

I love being done because I know my body gets a chance to rest and recover. It also means that I get to fight next week! Even though it was only a short five-week training camp I feel I have done more than enough. Everything is flowing well standing and on the ground.

The press for this fight is crazy. Everyone is calling wondering what the gameplan is and my thoughts on the fight. I can tell you that my game plan is always the same — make him play my game.

I am going to push the pace in this fight like crazy and I will go whereever the fight takes me. The general opinion seems to be that people expect me to take him to the ground where he seems to be the most vulnerable.

That’s not the case. I predict a stand up war!

If it goes to the ground then so be it, but I am not going to force the takedown. I know he will try to keep it standing and he will be very active and aggressive so I am looking forward to a tough exciting fight.

And that’s just what I plan to give the fans in London and around the world.

UFC President Dana White referred to his performance that night as “amazing” and has rewarded him with a high profile fight against The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 3 light heavyweight winner, Michael Bisping. Day is on a red hot five-fight win streak, which he will put on the line against “The Count” at UFC 85: “Bedlam” at the O2 Arena in London, England, on June 7. He’ll detail his preparation for the bout right here at MMAmania.com with frequent updates. He would like to thank his sponsors Hardcor Fightwear & Apparel and BodyArt Fitness. Jason Day ‘Count’ down to ‘Dooms’ day Michael Bisping UFC 85 fight (Part III)

jason day
Well, it’s two weeks away from my fight with Michael Bisping at UFC 85: “Bedlam” on June 7 and I am cruising along.

My weight is perfect and my training is going smooth. The first week of sport-specific training always kicks the crap out of me. It is physically exhausting, but it definitely helps me to peak at the right time.

Victor Valimaki came down from Edmonton to help put a little more heat on me through my rounds. It always helps to bring in guys to get a different energy and a different skill set. Valimaki is a tank — his size and strength definitely pushed my limits both standing and on the ground.

I always appreciate other fighters stepping up to help me.

My diet and micro-alignment coach from BodyArtFitness.com, Tanya Lee, noticed a trend with me: I get sick a few weeks before my fights. Therefore, this time we stayed on top of my immune system and I have been healthy all the way through my training.

It is an extra boost to my confidence knowing that I have been healthy throughout my training camp.

I capped off the week by taking in UFC 84: “Ill Will” on Saturday night. I thought the fights were great. I had picked BJ Penn to win but I didn’t think it would end like that, Sherk is a tank and BJ took it to him and ended it in exciting fashion.

It was awesome to see Wanderlei back in form — he is definitely one of my favorite fighters and I am glad to see him come out with the victory in the fashion he is accustomed to.

I am look forward to one last week of grinding before I leave for London, England. It is hard to describe the feelings and emotions leading up to the fight. Nervousness, anticipation and most of all anxiousness all play a big role leading up.

It is a rollercoaster ride for sure. I love it and I can’t wait to get in the cage let it all out. I have never been so eager to fight in my life … it will be a WAR!

Jason Day ‘Count’ down to ‘Dooms’ day Michael Bisping UFC 85 fight (Part II)

I am heading into the last portion of my training camp now with three weeks remaining until my fight with Michael Bisping at UFC 85: “Bedlam” at the O2 Arena in London, England, on June 7.

My conditioning coach, Kenny Seaman, breaks my routine into three phases when I fight:

  1. Weights and strength training
  2. Torturous plyometrics
  3. Sport specific training (my favorite)

I love the final phase because it is very intense and gets me ready to fight. It involves a lot of sprinting and bringing in fresh teammates to beat on me between intervals. This is actually the one time when I look forward to conditioning because it feels just like a fight and I have my team there helping me through the intensity.

I took the long weekend off to relax and focus in the Rockies and now I am ready to grind out my last two weeks of training. I will train right up until the Friday before I leave and then continue to stay loose throughout the week by jogging and hitting pads.

My training is going great I feel like I never missed a beat from my last fight and just picked up where I left off. I had a ton of support behind me for my first fight here in Canada but it feels like support is just gaining momentum for this one.

I am the lone Canadian on the card so I feel the whole country is behind me for this fight.

Jason Day: UFC 85 fight with Michael Bisping to be ‘wicked’

jason day
Props: Sherdog.com.

Quoteworthy:

“Everything is falling into place. It’s just clicking, and I’m loving it. I just look at guys, and something says I want to fight them. It’s just instinct I guess. It’s just pure luck that this fight came up, and they thought of me. I still have four weeks and I’m in good shape now. This isn’t short notice at all. It’s twice as long as any training camp I get. I’m playing leapfrog right now. I think I opened up a lot of eyes with that [Belcher] win, and now I get to fight another guy who is very well known, who’s got a great reputation and has never been stopped. A win over Bisping and I jump another few notches on the ladder. Right now I’m loving how I’m getting matched up…. He’s just a well-rounded fighter. I think we match up very well. I have a lot of respect for him. It’s not like he’s a bad guy or anything, but I think it has potential to be a wicked fight…. I love to put on an exciting fight. I’m an entertainer. I’d rather put on an exciting fight and lose a close decision than have a boring grind-out that I win. Nobody likes to lose, but I want to have that marquee fight.”

Jason Day — who just stopped Alan Belcher at UFC 83: “Serra vs. St. Pierre 2″ on April 19 in his Octagon debut — realizes the huge opportunity before him when he takes on Michael Bisping at UFC 85: “Bedlam” in London, England, on June 7. Day replaced Chris Leben, stepping up to take on the popular British fighter in front of a hostile United Kingdom crowd. A win for Day would be huge.

Jason Day chosen as replacement vs. Bisping

With Chris Leben out as Michael Bisping’s opponent at UFC 85 on June 7, UFC.com is reporting that Jason Day has been tapped to face Bisping in Leben’s stead. Leben was taken off the card after turning himself in to Clackamas County officials in Oregon last week in response to a probation violation on a 2005 [...]
