The World’s Worst MMA Camps

Hammer House Chute Boxe MMA
(Battle of the Teams Who Only Win About 60% of the Time.)

After doing a little bit of digging on Sherdog’s Fight Statistics section, MMA Madness posted a list of the ten most successful MMA camps (with at least 100 combined fights):

1. Arizona Combat Sports, 116-27, .81
1. Jackson’s Submission Fighting, 124-30, .81
3. Minnesota Martial Arts, 243-64, .79
4. Team Curran, 108-42, .77
4. American Jiu-Jitsu, 92-28, .77
4. American Kickboxing Academy, 174-53, .77
7. HIT Squad, 80-25, .76
7. Capital City Fighting Alliance, 78-25, .76
7. Southwest MMA, 78-25, .76
7. Miletich Martial Arts, 457-148, .76

Falling just out of the top ten were ATT, Xtreme Couture, Team Punishment, and The Pit.

In the interest of fairness, we compiled the ten least successful MMA camps. If you were thinking about joining up with these guys, think twice.

10. Wajyutsu Keisyukai A3, 78-58, 0.574 (Notable fighter: Hidetaka Monma)
9. Primal Tribe Fighting Club, 60-46, 0.566 (Notable fighter: Kyacey Uscola)
8. PUREBRED Omiya, 86-66, 0.566 (Notable fighters: Enson Inoue, George Sotiropoulos)
7. C-4 MMA, 133-104, 0.561 (Notable fighters: Dave “Pee Wee” Herman, UG troll Sean McCorkle)
6. Cobra Kai MMA Dojo, 70-56, 0.556 (Notable fighter: Dokonjonosuke Mishima)
5. PANCRASEism, 387-311, 0.554 (Notable fighters: Yuki Kondo, Ryo Kawamura)
4. Alliance-Square, 57-46, 0.553 (I’ve never heard of any of these people.)
3. Abe Ani Combat Club, 68-55, 0.553 (Notable fighters: Hiroyuki Abe, Megumi Fujii)
2. Team Schrijber, 186-152, 0.550 (Doesn’t ring a bell.)
1. American Martial Arts Center, 69-58, 0.543 (???)

So, mostly randoms, half of which are based in Japan. But lying just outside the bottom ten are:

— Team Wildman Vale Tudo, 73-51, 0.589 (Thomas Denny’s crew)
— Hammer House, 79-55, 0.590 (Mark Coleman, Phil Baroni, Kevin Randleman, and friends)
— Team Jorge Gurgel, 75-51, 0.595 (Dustin Hazelett, Matt Brown, Dorian Price…interestingly, not Jorge Gurgel)

And then slightly further out:

— City Boxing, 54-31, 0.635 (Brandon Vera, KJ Noons, Dean Lister)
— Chute Boxe, 154-87, 0.639 (Fabricio Werdum, Evangelista “Cyborg” Santos, Jean Silva)
— Renzo Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, 55-31, 0.640 (Renzo, Ricardo Almeida, Dante Rivera)

We could go on and on. But if you’re curious and feel like killing some time, check out Sherdog’s Fight Stats to learn about the fighters with the worst win/loss ratios, the fighters who fought in the most promotions, and something called the Gracie and Severn Effect.

Jackson/Griffin Scorecards; Main Event Wins “Fight of the Night”

Forrest Griffin Quinton Jackson UFC 86

The official judges’ tallies, from Dave Meltzer via Fightlinker:

Adalaide Byrd
Round 1: 10-9 Griffin
Round 2: 10-8 Griffin
Round 3: 10-9 Griffin
Round 4: 10-9 Jackson
Round 5: 10-9 Jackson

Nelson Hamilton
Round 1: 10-9 Jackson
Round 2: 10-8 Griffin
Round 3: 10-9 Griffin
Round 4: 10-9 Jackson
Round 5: 10-9 Griffin

Roy Silbert
Round 1: 10-9 Griffin
Round 2: 10-9 Griffin
Round 3: 10-9 Griffin
Round 4: 10-9 Jackson
Round 5: 10-9 Griffin

Personally, I don’t agree that Rampage was “robbed” in this decision whatsoever — I think Griffin clearly controlled rounds 1, 2, and 5 — but for all three judges to give round 3 to the challenger is very questionable; Rampage found his distance in that round and started landing his lead-fisted punch combos. But then again, all three judges gave round 4 to Jackson, which I saw as a very close frame that could have been scored for Griffin due to his triangle attempt, which came within a ball-hair of finishing the fight. I’m sure the argument will rage on, but there’s one thing we can all agree on: These judges are totally incompetent. Where’s Cecil Peoples when you need him?

As if there was any doubt, Rampage vs. Forrest won UFC 86’s Fight of the Night bonus, with both headliners picking up $60,000 for their event-saving performance. As mentioned earlier, Knockout of the Night went to Melvin Guillard for his 36-second destruction of Dennis Siver, and Submission of the Night went to Cole Miller for choking out Jorge Gurgel; those bonuses were also worth $60k. Full payout info to come as soon as we have it…

UFC 82: Jorge Gurgel vs. John Halverson

jorge gurgel vs john halverson at ufc 82
Lightweight Jorge Gurgel (11-3) will get a chance to redeem himself in front of his hometown fans when he returns to the Octagon to fight John Halverson (16-5) at UFC 82 on March 1 in Columbus, Ohio, according to the MMAWeekly.com rumors section.

Gurgel dropped a unanimous decision to Alvin Robinson at UFC 77: “Hostile Territory” in Cincinnati last month, enduring some intense punishment in the final two rounds. It was a big set back for the former contestant on season two of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) — prior to the loss he had strung together two consecutive victories.

Halverson perhaps has more to prove to himself, fans and UFC management. In his debut against Roger Huerta at UFC 67: “All or Nothing” back in February “Hurricane” didn’t last 20 seconds because of a knee that landed, which eventually led to a referee stoppage (Halverson claimed after the fight that the official told him to remain down because it was an illegal blow.)

He’s clearly earned himself a another shot in the big show, winning three straight fights via submission in smaller promotions since the loss to “El Matador.”

UFC 82 is set for the Nationwide Arena. For the latest rumored fight card click here.

Report: Diaz to fight Robinson at UFN 12

MMAmania.com is reporting that Nate Diaz will return to the octagon on January 23 at UFC Fight Night 12 against Alvin Robinson.

Diaz last competed at UFC Fight Night 11 and defeated Junior Assuncao via a guillotine choke.

As for Robinson, he was a part of the undercard of UFC 77 in Cincinnati, Ohio. He was able to record his first UFC victory by earning a unanimous decision win over Jorge Gurgel.

Diaz vs. Robinson has the potential to be a great fighter. Diaz will likely go into the contest as the favorite since he has more name recognition but the potential for upset is strong. It’s hard for anyone to make the case that the UFC is protecting Diaz, the winner from the fifth season of The Ultimate Fighter, with this matchup.

UFC 77: Fighter paydays and salaries for ‘Hostile Territory’

UFCmania.com has received the fighter payouts for UFC 77: “Hostile Territory” from the Ohio Athletic Commission (OAC) for the event held on October 20 at the U.S. Bank Arena in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Former heavyweight champion Time Sylvia was the top earner, hauling in a $200,000 purse for outpointing Brandon Vera in the co-main event of the evening.

Keep in mind the salaries listed above do not include fight bonuses, sponsorships, percentages and other unofficial payments. For example, fighters receive bonuses for “Submission of the Night,” “Fight of the Night,” and others.

In fact, UFC President Dana White announced at the post-event press conference that Silva earned a $40,000 bonus for his stoppage of Franklin. Grice and Black each earned and extra $40,000 for their scrap. And Octagon newcomer Maia pocketed an additional $40,000 for almost putting Jensen to sleep.

The total base fighter payroll for the UFC 77 was $652,000. The 16,054 fans in attendance paid a collective $2,519,850 to watch the festivities live.

UFC 77: Weigh-in results for ‘Hostile Territory’ (Update)

UFC 77 weigh in results
The field of 18 fighters for UFC 77: “Hostile Territory” have all weighed-in for the pay-per-view (PPV) event tomorrow night from the U.S. Bank Arena in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Welterweight Josh Burkman was the only one to not make weight initially, shedding every layer of clothing he had to try and make the 170-pound limit. He came in at 171.5 and eventually made weight. He is now good to go.

Other than that it was a rather uneventful event. However, it seems as though the lightweight fight between hometown product Jorge Gurgel and his opponent, Alvin Robinson, have been bumped up to the main card.

That guarantees at least five televised fights. The middleweight showdown between Yushin Okami and Jason MacDonald is not among them, however.

Here are the official results:

185 lbs.: Anderson Silva (184.5) vs. Rich Franklin (184)
Hvywt.: Tim Sylvia (260.5) vs. Brandon Vera (225.5)
205 lbs.: Stephan Bonnar (204) vs. Eric Schafer (203)
185 lbs.: Kalib Starnes (186) vs. Alan Belcher (186)
155 lbs.: Jorge Gurgel (155) vs. Alvin Robinson (155.5)
185 lbs.: Jason MacDonald (184.5) vs. Yushin Okami (186)
185 lbs.: Ryan Jensen (185.5) vs. Demian Maia (185)
170 lbs.: Josh Burkman (171) vs. Forrest Petz (170)
155 lbs.: Jason Black (156) vs. Matt Grice (155)

The televised portion of the pay-per-view (PPV) event begins Saturday, October 20, at 10 p.m. ET. We will provide LIVE blow-by-blow, round-by-round coverage of the main card action at this time.

UFC 77 quick results, however, will begin to flow earlier than that here at UFCmania.com at about 8:30 p.m. ET with the prelim fights.

It’s going to be a killer night — see you all then!

UFC Quick Quote: Jorge Gurgel to ‘beat down’ Alvin Robinson at UFC 77

jorge gurgel ufc

“(Robinson) is a tough wrestler, very big for the weight class and is very explosive. He’s a very good athlete, probably the best opponent I’ve had so far. But I’m going to beat him down. I think he lacks heart. If things don’t go his way, I think he’ll fold.”

– UFC lightweight Jorge Gurgel talks about his lightweight fight with Alvin Robinson this Saturday at UFC 77: “Hostile Territory” at the U.S. Bank Arena in Cincinnati, Ohio, with FOXSports.com. During the interview he also talks about the preparation of his training partner, Rich Franklin, for the title fight with Anderson Silva.

UFC 77 results coverage and LIVE blow-by-blow commentary

UFC 77 results and coverage
UFC 77: “Hostile Territory” is set for Saturday, October 20 at 10 p.m. ET on pay-per-view (PPV) from the U.S. Bank Arena in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Even though the event is little more than two weeks away, we decided to make the usual announcement a bit early because it is such a slow news day.

We’ll cover the second-ever UFC event in the Buckeye State like we do all the rest — with up-to-the-minute quick updates of the undercard action and round-by-round coverage of the televised portion of the card.

UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva defends his title in the main event against hometown favorite and former 185-pound titleholder, Rich Franklin. “Ace” is out for redemption after getting torched by the “Spider” in their first encounter at UFC 64 almost exactly one year ago.

This rematch is going to be a much better fight than the first. Franklin seems determined to get his title back.

Here are the rest of the fights we can expect:

Main card (televised)
Hvywt.: Tim Sylvia (23-3) vs. Brandon Vera (8-0)
205 lbs.: Stephan Bonnar (10-4) vs. Eric Schafer (7-2-2)
185 lbs.: Kalib Starnes (8-1-1) vs. Alan Belcher (10-3)

Undercard (may not be broadcast):
185 lbs.: Jason MacDonald (19-8) vs. Yushin Okami (20-4)
155 lbs.: Jorge Gurgel (11-2) vs. Alvin Robinson (8-2)
170 lbs.: Josh Burkman (8-4) vs. Forrest Petz (13-4)
185 lbs.: Ryan Jensen (11-2) vs. Demian Maia (5-0)
155 lbs.: Jason Black (21-3-1) vs. Matt Grice (8-1)

I have no idea the reason Okami-MacDonald would not be a guaranteed televised bout. Regardless, this line up has some real competitve fights from top to bottom — make sure to tune-in. However, if you can’t we will have everything you need right here come fight night.

Many of our readers check-in before, during and after the PPV telecast to share their thoughts on the action. In the meantime feel free to share your predictions in the comments section below.

UFC 77: Doug Evans out against Jorge Gurgel

Boy that was fast.

Just a few days ago we passed along news that Jorge Gurgel and Doug Evans would clash in a lightweight preliminary bout at UFC 77 on October 20 in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Today, MMAWeekly.com is reporting that Evans is injured and will not be ready in time for the bout.

It’s unclear at this time who will replace Evans against Gurgel. For now it’s just Gurgel vs. the ultra-tough and very formidable, TBA.

We will, of course, keep you posted when the 155-pound opponent is announced. In the meantime, check out the latest UFC 77 fight card here.

The pay-per-view event is headlined by the 185-pound title fight between UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva and former division king, Rich Franklin.
