Sengoku Second Battle: Barnett, Randleman victorious

Former UFC heavyweight champion and PRIDE superstar Josh “The Babyface Assassin” Barnett (22-5) defeated fellow UFC veteran Jeff “The Snowman” Monson (24-8) via unanimous decision earlier this morning at Sengoku II: Second Battle at Tokyo’s Ariake Coliseum in Tokyo, Japan.

In an event filled with slick first-round submissions, Barnett needed a decision to overcome the wily Monson. Barnett however was dominant in his performance, controlling Monson on the ground and using his size to stifle his much smaller opponent.

In the night’s only other decision, former UFC heavyweight champion Kevin “The Monster” Randleman (17-12) returned to the win column with a controversial decision over Pancrase veteran Ryo Kawamura (8-3-2).

Randleman hadn’t competed since October of 2006 when he was submitted by Shogun Rua at PRIDE 32. The former NCAA national champion was in trouble with the law in August of 2007 and even more trouble with a gruesome staph infection last October.

It’s great to see him back and hopefully his win over Kawamura is a sign of things to come.

Also on the card, former UFC middleweight Jorge Santiago (17-7) continued his hot streak by submitting Grabaka’s Yuki Sasaki (21-14-1). Santiago was just 1-2 in the UFC, having been knocked out by Chris Leben at Fight Night 6 and Alan Belcher at Fight Night 7.

Since then he’s an impressive 5-0, dominating the competition with a variety of submissions and knockouts.

Three-time King of Pancrase Yuki Kondo (48-22-6) was submitted by grappling deity Roger Gracie (2-0). Kondo had the thankless role of late fill-in for Gracie, who was flying solo until May 5th, when Kondo was finally announced.

Here are the Sengoku II: Second Battle complete results:

-Satoru Kitaoka defeats Ian James Schaffa via submission (Guillotine Choke - R1)
-Mike Pyle defeats Dan Hornbuckle via submission (Triangle Choke - R1)
-Eiji Mitsuoka defeats Kwang Hee Lee submission (Rear Naked Choke - R1)
-Jorge Santiago defeats Yuki Sasaki via submission (Armbar - R3)
-Kiss Nakao defeats Jim York via KO (R2)
-Kevin Randleman defeats Ryo Kawamura via unanimous decision
-Roger Gracie defeats Yuki Kondo via sumbission (Rear Naked Choke - R1)
-Josh Barnett defeats Jeff Monson via unanimous decision

Sengoku II LIVE Play-By-Play (kinda)

I might not give the most accurate play-by-play, because I’m multi tasking and trying to do other stuff at the same time as I watch Sengoku II and post this. I say “kinda” because I don’t know how long I’ll be awake. I’m in the United States and it’s 4:20am right now as I start this [...]

Staph Infection: A Pictorial

We’ve all seen the lovely staph infection of Kevin Randleman.

Now behold…

…the equally heinous staph of Drew McFedries.

Thanks to MMAMania for assisting in grossing us all out.

Pictures of Staph infection MMA-style

Not too long ago former UFC heavyweight champion, Kevin Randleman, was the clear-cut winner when it came to the most gruesome-looking staph infection.

Well, I’m nauseated to report that “The Monster” could have some competition thanks to grapefruit-sized lesion that recently grew in the hamstring area of Drew McFedries.

Check out the gore after the jump if you dare. Both fighters, for what it’s worth, made full recoveries.

I, however, have not.

staph

Note that McFedries is on the left and Randleman is on the right (it was located just under his armpit.)

‘The Monster’ Invades Tokyo…

KR

Nightmare of Battle passes along the news that Sengoku II — which is scheduled for May 18th at Tokyo’s Ariake Colosseum — will feature a bout between Kevin “The Monster” Randleman and “Big” Jim York. You may remember Randleman as the former UFC heavyweight champion who got a suplex-variation named after him in 2004 and went through a nasty bout of staph last year. York is a New Zealand-based vet of the MARS and Spartan Reality Fight clubs, who’s won all nine of his fights since getting choked out in his pro debut. By comparison, Randleman has only won two of his last nine fights (though they’ve been against much, much tougher competition than York’s).

The match joins already-booked bouts between Satoru Kitaoka and Ian Schaffa, as well as Eiji Mitsuoka vs. Kwang Hee Lee; Roger Gracie, Yoshihiro Nakao, Yuki Sasaki are still expected to compete, against fighters to be names later.

In other semi-interesting fighter news, Affliction’s nascent MMA promotion has picked up Mark Hominick for its debut card, slated for July in Texas. Hominick most recently competed as a featherweight for WEC, and has also fought for TKO and the UFC; his opponent hasn’t yet been named. Hominick’s manager Shawn Tompkins confirmed that Affliction is no longer doing business with Golden Boy Productions: “I heard there was a conflict between HDNet and HBO wanting the TV rights to the shows.”

Hey man, it’s like John Thor said — everybody wants a piece of the action.

Sengoku II: Kevin Randleman vs. Jim York

sengoku
World Victory Road has scheduled former UFC heavyweight champion Kevin “The Monster” Randleman (16-12) to face New Zealand’s Jim “Big” York (9-1) at Sengoku II on May 18 at Tokyo’s Ariake Coliseum according to the official Sengoku Web site.

Randleman hasn’t competed since August of 2006, dropping a submission loss to current UFC light heavyweight Mauricio “Shogun” Rua at PRIDE 32.

Randleman is just 3-7 in his last ten bouts. The former NCAA national champion was also in trouble with the law in August of 2007 and even more trouble with a gruesome staph infection last October.

In addition to Sengoku II, Randleman is penciled in to face Jeff “The Snowman” Monson (24-7) this June at the Global Fighting Championships in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Here’s hoping the former headliner can make a successful return to the world of mixed martial arts. Standing in his way however is a very tough opponent in Jim York.

York has nine straight wins to his credit with five of them coming via submission and the other four by way of (T)KO. Simply put, York has no intention of leaving things in the judge’s hands.

Knowing Randleman, neither does he. This could be his last run at success in mixed martial arts, so you can bet he’s going to be looking to make a statement.

Here’s one fan that’s still pulling for him.

Kevin Randleman to make MMA return and could fight Jeff Monson

kevin randlemanFormer UFC heavyweight champion, Kevin Randleman, is in negotiations to ink a deal with the Japanese-based World Victory Road promotion to make a return to mixed martial arts action on May 18, according to MMAWeekly.com.

In addition, “The Monster” revealed during the interview that it’s also possible that he will take on Jeff Monson one month later during a Global Fighting Championships (GFC) event penciled in for sometime in June.

That’s an ambitious schedule for a fighter who has not competed since 2006 — a submission loss to Mauricio “Shogun” Rua at Pride 32: “The Real Deal.” Not to mention Randleman recently survived a SERIOUS staph infection that could have killed him if went untreated.

Randleman — who is now training with XTreme Couture out of Las Vegas — was also recently stopped for Driving Under the Influence (DUI), intimidating a public officer and other charges in Sin City.

He has satisfied a one-year suspension from the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) for providing a non-human urine sample following his loss to Rua.

The two-time NCAA Division I Wrestling Champion from Ohio State University defeated Pete Williams at UFC 23 in 1999 to capture the vacant heavyweight title. Randleman’s title reign was brief, however, when Randy Couture stopped him the following year via technical knockout (strikes) at UFC 28 in round three of their championship bout.

Best of luck on the comeback, Kevin. These last two years have been rough … it’d be nice to see you enjoy some success.
