Media Assault of the Day: Rachelle Leah’s Playboy Push

(Daniel Craig interview? This is big news!)

As you probably already know, Rachelle Leah, former Octagon girl and current host of UFC All Access, appears on the cover of November’s Playboy. This isn’t related to the sport of MMA in any real way, but it’s an excuse to plaster her picture all over the place so no one is really complaining. Except there’s something weird going on here.

Below are excerpts from a Yahoo! MMA story on Leah, a UFC.com story on her, and the official press release from Playboy. Two of those organizations are expected to shamelessly push this story on us. One is…not expected to do that. See if you can tell which is which without cheating:

Excerpt A:

Rachelle was an ordinary Las Vegas girl, studying to be a paramedic while doing some modeling on the side when her photo was taken at a boxing match and posted on the web. Soon after, that photo was discovered by the UFC and she was gracefully strutting around the 8-sided cage as an official Octagon Girl.

Despite promising never to climb into The Octagon for a match herself, Rachelle admits to being attracted to the kind of raw energy and excitement found at a UFC fight. “Any extreme sport is pretty much up my alley,” explains Rachelle. “I like to dirt-bike. I wakeboard in the summer. I snowboard in the winter. I skateboard—I do it all.”

Excerpt B:

Yeah, she’s Playboy’s November cover girl, which will hit newsstands on Friday. She was the UFC’s most popular octagon girl and she just signed a deal as a spokesmodel with Anheuser-Busch. While none of those jobs require a degree from Harvard, it’s selling Leah short to believe she’s making a living solely from her looks.

She is brash and thoughtful and introspective and witty and plenty crafty. She uses her share of coarse language, her conversation invariably turns to sports and, most significantly, guys, she loves – absolutely loves – mixed martial arts.

Excerpt C:

Playboy is a big deal, and has been home to pictorials from the likes of Marilyn Monroe and Pamela Anderson to Cindy Crawford and Kim Kardashian. So when the offer to appear in the magazine (and on the cover) was presented to the 24-year old model and actress, it was something that she took very seriously.

“The main reason I did it was because to be on the cover of Playboy is a huge honor,” she said. “And I’m open-minded; I’m not the type of girl that’s like ‘oh my God, you should never be nude.’ But I am the type of girl that says you should never be nude if it’s not done right, and I knew that it was going to be done right.”

Give up? Answer key is after the jump.

A: Playboy official press release
B: Yahoo! MMA story
C: UFC.com article

So what’s the point, you ask? Nothing. Just seems interesting that while there are two companies that are poised to benefit from a UFC spokesmodel appearing in Playboy, there are three very similar fluff pieces written about it.

The 10 Hottest Ring Girls in MMA

Though CagePotato launched in October 2007 with the tagline “MMA News, Gossip, and Girls,” lately our site has become “MMA News, Videos, The Occasional Insightful Interview, Videos, and Videos.” And we’re totally cool with that, but it’s good to revisit our scummy roots once in a while. Thus, we present our official list of the ten sexiest women to ever walk around cages while holding numbered cards. Feel free to debate the order in our comments section, but your arguments will most likely fall on deaf ears.

9. Rebecca Love (WFA, WEC)

8. Edith Labelle (UFC)

7. Laura Jones (Cage Rage)

Quoteworthy:

“Like it or not, the modern world is built on duality. Where’s there’s beauty, there’s always savagery somewhere nearby. Enter the UFC’s Octagon girls. On a backdrop of limb-mangling carnage, these bikini-uniformed recruits perform an all-important task. Via a digit-emblazoned piece of card, they let people know what round it is. Now, in a rare exception of the sexy/ugly dichotomy, we’ve taken away the sweaty, grappling men and plonked these ladies in the middle of the Nevada desert. In appropriately skimpy attire, of course.”

Yeah, whatever. Here’s more:

‘UFC All Access’ with Wanderlei Silva to debut on MTV2

Wanderlei MTV2
“UFC All Access” with light heavyweight Wanderlei Silva will debut on MTV2 on Thursday, December 27, 2007, at 1 a.m. ET, according to UFC.com.

This also marks the programming debut for the organization on MTV2 — SpikeTV had run the popular one-hour series on its network exclusively up until this latest news. SpikeTV will still air the episode at 12:30 a.m. ET that same late evening.

Here’s the snip:

“Go behind the scenes with Octagon Girl Rachelle Leah as she hangs out with UFC light heavyweight fighter Wanderlei Silva. See what’s happening with Wanderlei as he prepares to fight Chuck Liddell - the fight everyone in MMA has wanted to see for years.”

“The Axe Murderer” (sans X-Treme Couture gear) is preparing for his upcoming showdown with former light heavyweight champion, Chuck Liddell, at UFC 79: “Nemesis” on December 29 from the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Fortunately, it appears that the addition of MTV2 (no word on whether it is temporary or permanent) did not affect the job status of former UFC ring girl and current “UFC All Access” host, Rachelle Leah.

Phew.

This episode will re-air on MTV2 during a normal hour at Friday, December 28, 2007, at 10 p.m. ET.

Important to note: SpikeTV is a division of MTV Networks, which is a unit of Viacom.

Program reminder: Sean Sherk on UFC All Access; UFC 73 Countdown to air Monday

seansherktalksaboutfranca.jpg
Does the “UFC All Access” curse truly exist?

UFC Lightweight Champion Sean Sherk will be the latest candidate to test out the bizarre phenomenon, which has claimed other titleholders before him such as Georges St. Pierre (UFC 69), Matt Hughes (UFC 65) and Andrei Arlovski (UFC 59).

In fact, then 205-pound king Chuck Liddell (UFC 66) is the rare exception in recent history to not fall victim.

Sherk will be featured this Monday, July 2, at 11:30 p.m. on “UFC All Access,” which airs on the Spike TV network. The special — hosted by UFC spokesmodel Rachelle Leah — will give us an inside look at his training and preparation for Hermes Franca.

Sherk and Franca are set to clash at UFC 73: “Stacked” on July 7.

In addition, “UFC 73 Countdown” will air at 10:30 p.m. ET that same night. Expect this special to showcase the two title fights on the card, as well as the light heavyweight showdown between Tito Ortiz and Rashad Evans.

It should be a solid night of UFC programming to prepare us for the monster show one week from today.

Don’t miss it.

But, in the event that you do, the episode of “UFC All Access” will re-air on Thursday, July 5, at midnight and Friday, July 6, at 1:30 a.m. ET. “UFC 73 Countdown” will re-air on Thursday, July 5, at 11:00 p.m. ET and Saturday, July 7, at 6:00 p.m.

Corners of the Octagon

Yet another new addition to UFC Fight is a weekly column called "Corners of the Octagon." In this column I will discuss random tidbits of MMA news. I think it's a good way to touch on everything that has happened in MMA. Think of it as the "put your hand on the seat before you girlfriend sits down," only not as smooth.

Drugs, drugs and more drugs

My, drugs = loses theory has been proven once again as the two fighters that got caught; Carter Williams (cocaine) and Jorge Ortiz (steroids), both lost their fights. Even with Royce Gracie's win, drug users have an absolutely horrid record. My guess is not, the cheaters are looking for an edge, but rather, they're looking for an easier route in training.

WEC:
Featherweight Division

Last Saturday's Ultimate Fighter Finale had a huge impact on the WEC featherweight title picture as Jens Pulver will make the move down. This is another big step towards getting the 145lbs division the respect it deserves. Who knows, maybe MMAweekly will add a featherweight division to its world rankings?

Look at lightweights!

Cole Miller, Manvil Gamburyan, Nate Diaz, Joe Lauzan, Gray Maynard and maybe Cory Hill all look like legitimate fighters for the 155lb division. This goes as a warning the rest of the division as fans will want to see fighters they know. Fighters on the bubble may not be getting a Zuffa paycheck too much longer.

What's the hell is going on?

What is the UFC doing? Stripping PRIDE of its talent and not putting on shows isn't the best way to run an organization on the frits is it? What happens after the title fight? Will the winner defend both titles? How is that going to work for UFC PPVs? At least the first Ferretta owned PPV will be taking place soon.

"The Canadian Crapper" Chris Benoit

Before I became a MMA fan, I was a professional wrestling fan. Being as obsessive as I am, I regularly kept up with the ins-and-outs, and the behind-the-scenes news of WWE and everything I heard about Chris Benoit was good. Wow, this dude is messed up. It's one thing for a guy to kill his wife, which, as sick as it is, happens every day; it's another thing to kill a son or daughter. So, I think everyone will agree with me when I say: "What a sick f*ck."

Rachelle Leah:

On an upnote, here are some Rachelle Leah pictures to make your Thursday a little better. She recently did a spread for Maxim or Stuff. I can't remember which one so I put up both, enjoy: here and here and some random pics: here
