Former UFC middleweight champion Rich Franklin is once again headed out to meet some U.S. troops, visiting with Marines stationed at a military base in Quantico, Va., as well as injured veterans at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, DC, on May 23, according to ArmyTimes.com.
“Ace,” remember, traveled with Randy Couture and Octagon vixen Rachelle Leah to Iraq in 2006 to boost morale and also offer up some mixed martial arts tips. In fact, according to Franklin, he feels that it’s his civic duty to give back to those who defend our freedom.
Here’s the snip:
“My career took me to a place in professional fighting, but part of me feels like it’s a civic duty and a chance for me to give back.”
The report indicates that Franklin’s two older brothers also happen to be Marines.
He’ll be the latest fighter to visit Walter Reed Army Medical Center — the American Kickboxing Academy tandem of Jon Fitch and Josh Koscheck just returned from a visit.
It’s a situation Franklin knows will be “emotional,” but worthwhile.
Here’s another snip:
“I just didn’t prepare myself for what I saw [at Camp Lejeune]. That’ll help me for what I might see when I’m at Walter Reed.”
Score another one for the good guys … this is always good news to hear.
Franklin is coming off a second round technical knockout of Travis Lutter at UFC 83: “Serra vs. St. Pierre 2″ on April 19. His next fight or opponent has not been made official at this time.

Over the last couple weeks, Matt Serra came crashing back down to Earth, Rich Franklin got his balls back, Shinya Aoki smothered JZ, and Denis Kang went out like a bitch. So if you haven’t swung by our Power Rankings section lately, please do so. In particular, the lightweight, middleweight, and pound-for-pound lists were freshly updated today. And you may be surprised at how high I ranked Travis Wiuff in the heavyweight division for going all the way at YAMMA 1…
Anyway, give ‘em a look and let us know if you see things differently.

“Rich has to make a decision. We’ve certainly considered going to 205 and seeing how he does up there. He’s fought almost everybody in the 185-pound division. There are some guys that he could fight, but if he beats them it knocks them out of title contention. And nobody is looking to see Rich and Anderson Silva 3 right now, including me. He’s not helping the 185-pound division right now by beating everybody up in it. We’ve talked about going to 205 and how would he match up with some of those guys, with a Forrest Griffin or a Keith Jardine. There’s a whole bunch of 205’s that I think would be interesting. In the end, we do what the UFC wants. If they want us to try 205, we’re up for it. If they want to keep us at 185, then we’ll do that too.”
-Manager Monte Cox tells MMAweekly that former UFC middleweight champion (and light heavyweight competitor) Rich “Ace” Franklin is considering a return to light heavyweight if it makes sense for all parties involved.

When former light heavyweight champion Chuck Liddell was forced off the UFC 85 card with a hamstring injury, the organization scrambled to find a main event-worthy bout to take the place of his scheduled showdown with Rashad Evans at the O2 Arena in London, England.
Several possible fights were discussed, including a middleweight tilt between former UFC middleweight champion, Rich Franklin, and former Pride FC dual division belt holder, Dan Henderson.
In fact, according to a Yahoo!Sports.com report, “Ace” had to turn down the opportunity because he “felt after such a hard training camp that he wouldn’t be able to peak again so soon.” Franklin just dispatched of Travis Lutter via second round technical knockout at UFC 83: “Serra vs. St. Pierre 2″ on April 19.
The interesting thing here is that even though the fight won’t take place on June 7, it is expected to go down later on this year.
That’s a fantastic match up — Franklin is proving that he is perhaps the second best 185-pound fighter in the world, defeating all comers since 2003 with the exception of Anderson Silva (lost twice).
On the other hand, Hendo needs to re-establish himself as one of the top pound-for-pound fighters on the planet. He’s lost two straight albeit to talented champions Quinton “Rampage” Jackson and Silva.
And it wouldn’t get any easier with Franklin, but it would create some fireworks in a division that sorely needs them. It’s a nice clash of styles between two of the best in the sport.
This is going to be a hard one to predict if and when it goes off. Can’t wait.
Sidenote: Matt Hughes stepped up to take on Thiago Alves in the UFC 85 main event, as well as Michael Bisping and Chris Leben … not to mention James Irvin (he’ll take on Evans).

Quoteworthy:
“… I got caught – I haven’t watched the fight yet but some of my buddies told me I got caught with a pretty good punch about 18 seconds in…. I thought I had him. I was really surprised when he was able to roll out. It’s pretty rare for somebody to get out. It’s just one of those things. Golf clap for Rich for getting out…. I was probably a half-inch, maybe even a quarter-inch, from breaking Rich Franklin’s arm. If we played that fight again I think I’ve got a real good shot at beating him. How close was I to getting my arm raised in both those fights? Sometimes luck is … And, I’m not saying that Rich got lucky. I don’t want people sending me hate mail saying I was saying Rich got lucky. I’m just saying I got unlucky.”
The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 4 middleweight winner, Travis Lutter, talks about his technical knockout loss to UFC 83: “Serra vs. St. Pierre 2″ on April 19. In addition to discussing the loss, “The Serial Killer” goes in to details about all the unnecessary hate mail he receives for his past two losing performances.

Georges St. Pierre got his revenge on Matt Serra’s upset victory last year by defeating him in the rematch by TKO in round 2 at UFC 83 tonight. GSP controlled the entire fight, opting to use his quick takedowns and wrestling to keep the fight on the ground and pound Matt Serra out. The final [...]
