Changes to UFC 85, Additions to UFC 87

Carneiro Chonan MMA UFC
(Carneiro and Chonan during a DEEP match in 2005, which ended in a controversial TKO loss for Carneiro due to a cut.)

Joe Silva’s hands have been full this week piling on fighters for UFC 87, and scrambling to replace them for UFC 85. First, the word on “Bedlam” (London, England; June 7th):

— Ryo Chonan has pulled out of his rematch with Roan Carneiro for unknown reasons. Replacing him will be Kevin “The Fire” Burns, a 4-1 UFC newcomer with possibly the cheesiest nickname we’ve ever heard. The UFC is doing Fire no favors by putting him against “Jucao,” who already boasts wins over Rich Clementi and Matt Horwich.

— Speaking of undercard bouts few people will care about, British fighter Neil Wain has broken his nose and won’t be able to face Antoni Hardonk. Filling in for him will be Eddie Sanchez, who has won his last two UFC matches against Soa Palelei and Colin Robinson, and will do his best to deal with fighting across the Atlantic Ocean on two weeks notice.

As for “Seek and Destroy” (August 9th; Minneapolis, MN):

— Frankie Edgar, who took his first career loss against Gray Maynard at UFC Fight Night 13, will be returning at UFC 87 against an opponent to be named later. With Sean Sherk indicating that he wants to be part of the first UFC card in his home state of Minnesota, an Edgar/Sherk bout isn’t out of the realm of possibility.

Terry Etim vs. Rob Emerson fight rounds out UFC 84 card

Emerson Etim
Lightweights Terry Etim (10-1) and Rob Emerson (7-6) are confirmed to battle it out for three rounds on the UFC 84: “Ill Will” undercard at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, on May 24, according to UFC.com.

Emerson is a former contestant on The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 5, winning his first official fight inside the Octagon his last time out against Keita Nakamura at UFC 81: “Breaking Point” via split decision back in February 2008.

Prior to that Emerson — who has been connected with (and served jail time because of) a gang dubbed “The Lords of South County”— was involved in a bizarre simultaneous knockout/submission against Gray Maynard at TUF 5 Finale.

Etim is a British product who has an even record (1-1) with the promotion, losing to Gleison Tibau most recently via unanimous decision at UFC 75: “Champion vs. Champion” in September 2007. He also submitted Matt Grice (guillotine choke) at UFC 70: “Nations Collide” in his debut last year.

This latest announcement confirms the bouts slated for UFC 84, which features the 155-pound doozy between reigning champion, BJ Penn, and former belt keeper, Sean Sherk, as the main event of the evening. Wanderlei Silva, Keith Jardine, Tito Ortiz and Lyoto Machida round a very impressive night of fights.

Here’s the complete line up:

Main Event:

UFC Lightweight Champion B.J. Penn (12-4-1) vs. Sean Sherk (32-2-1)

Main card (televised):

205 lbs.: Wanderlei Silva (31-8-1) vs. Keith Jardine (13-3-1)
205 lbs.: Goran Reljic (7-0) vs. Wilson Gouveia (10-4)
205 lbs.: Tito Ortiz (15-5-1) vs. Lyoto Machida (12-0)
205 lbs.: Thiago Silva (12-0) vs. Antonio Mendes (14-2)

Under card (may not be broadcast):

185 lbs.: Rousimar Palhares (7-1) vs. Ivan Salaverry (12-5)
205 lbs.: Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou (4-2) vs. Kazuhiro Nakamura (11-7)
155 lbs.: Terry Etim (10-1) vs. Rob Emerson (7-6)
170 lbs.: Jon Koppenhaver (5-1) vs. Yoshiyuki Yoshida (9-2)
170 lbs.: Dong Hyun Kim (9-1-1) vs. Jason Tan (5-2)
265 lbs.: Shane Carwin (8-0) vs. Christian Wellisch (8-3)

Good stuff.

Mazzagatti comments on controversial decision

411mania.com was able to get exclusive comments from referee Steve Mazzagatti, who presided over the Rob Emerson vs. Gray Maynard no contest that took place this past Saturday during the TUF 5 season finale.

In regard to the decision:

“I stopped the fight as Rob was in pain. I did not see a tap, but I don’t see what it matters. In boxing we give both fighters an 8 count and may count one or both fighters out. In this sport we don’t have an 8 count. But both fighters were done. Should a fighter who is out win? I don’t have time to think about all this stuff but I hope we can learn. I do think it was the right call.

“I also want to say the call was mine. I informed the commission that both fighters were unable to continue. That was my call.”

I still disagree with the decision. Mazzagatti didn’t even acknowledge Maynard’s condition until after the fight. He was completely focused on Emerson.

In any event, a rematch between Maynard and Emerson is already in the works, as is a possible rematch between Nate Diaz and Manny Gamburyan. However, the Diaz vs. Gamburyan may have to wait because it’s looking likely as though he’ll undergo surgery.

Update: In a previous version of this story I incorrectly stated that Loretta Hunt fromThe Fight Network had reported that UFC president Dana White was seen speaking with Mazzagatti and NSAC officials after the fight was stopped. Loretta never reported that and it was irresponsible on my part to attribute those comments to her.
