Elite XC weigh-in results for ‘Return of the King’ on Showtime

kjnoonsedwardspic
Elite XC: “Return of the King” at the Blaisdell Arena in Honolulu, Hawaii, is set for tomorrow (June 14), airing LIVE on premium cable network Showtime at 10 p.m. ET.

Fighters today all tipped the scales for the event and here are the results:

KJ Noons (160) vs. Yves Edwards (158.5)
Nick Diaz (169) vs. Muhsin Corbbrey (163.5)
Murilo “Ninja” Rua (184) vs. Tony Bonello (185)
Dave “Pee Wee” Herman (243.5) vs. Ron Waterman (263)
Rafael Feijao (205) vs. Wayne Cole (204)
Kala Kolohe (186) vs. Bubba McDaniel (184.5)
Kepa Madeiros (171.5) vs. Carl Barton (183)
Russell Doane (135) vs. Dwayne Haney (133.5)
PJ Dean (160.5) vs. Dean Lista (160)
Lolohea Mahe (260) vs. Chris Barnard (232.5)
Kaleo Kwan (160) vs. Mike Aina (160)
Mark Oshiro (140.5) vs. Chris “Red Bull” Willems (141.5)

Diaz — a 160-pound lightweight — was unable to hit the target, coming in eight pounds over the limit. However, he able to negotiate a catchweight of 168 pounds with his opponent prior to stepping on the scale.

He will likely have a percentage of his purse garnished and tacked on to Corbbrey’s paycheck.

MMAmania.com will provide complete results and coverage of the event tomorrow evening — it’s solid line up of mixed martial arts competition.

Don’t miss it … but if you do you know where to get the skinny.

Dana White backpedals on major announcement?

dana white
Props: Baltimore Sun

Quoteworthy:

“I’m doing it Tuesday. Let me tell you how out of [expletive deleted] control that thing is. I was talking to ESPN and [the reporter] was talking about competition and I said, ‘Let me tell you what. People have been trying to compete with the UFC for years, even before we bought it. The last big one everyone thought was a big threat … was the IFL. They went public, raised 800-[expletive deleted] million dollars, then they were talking about doing fighter benefits and stuff. They got the first network deal and those other guys weren’t the first on. They got time on 60 Minutes with us when 60 Minutes did their piece on us, and now the IFL is gone. They are [expletive deleted] down, their stock is worth half a cent (Editor’s note: IFLI closed today at $0.02). That’s what we were talking about that day and I said I’m going to make an announcement to my employees that shows everyone exactly where this business is going in the next couple years. I said I wanted to make the announcement to my employees, so it’s not even like I was making a big announcement to the media. If I was doing that I would’ve had a big news conference and then gone off to London. I wanted to wait until I was back to do it. It’s a big [expletive deleted] announcement, it’s a big [expletive deleted] deal but I got a lot of other stuff we’re working on right now. It was never anything I said I was going to announce to the media…. I wanted to do it after I got back from England and I got back late Wednesday. Also, all of our people are going to be in town next week for The Ultimate Fighter finale. All of our production guys, Joe Rogan, I mean everyone who works for the UFC is coming to it.”

It’s apparently still a big fucking announcement, but he never intended for it to be announced to the media. That certainly rules out “going public” even though White has shot down those rumors fast and furious. Interesting clue that the announcement is somehow tied to the IFL and competition. Whatever. This site is done passing along news on this matter until Tuesday when we hear it from the horse’s mouth. Feel free to speculate and go nuts in the comments section below.

UFC 88: Chuck Liddell to headline Atlanta PPV event on September 6

chuck liddell atlanta

Former light heavyweight champion Chuck Liddell will return to action at UFC 88 to headline a pay-per-view (PPV) event at the Philips Arena in Atlanta, Ga., on Saturday, September 6, according to recent statements from promotion president Dana White.

No opponent has been named at this time.

The “Iceman” was supposed to challenge Mauricio “Shogun” Rua today during the main event at UFC 85: “Bedlam.” However, Rua had to withdraw from the bout because he shredded his surgically repaired knee while training for the 205-pound tilt.

Liddell was then paired with Rashad Evans, but disaster struck again when he had to pull out of the match with a torn hamstring.

There has been some recent unofficial chatter that UFC Middleweight Champion has been approached about moving up to compete at light heavyweight. He is also expected to return to the Octagon at UFC 88. Whether or not those two items are related (highly unlikely) remains to be seen.

MMAmania.com first passed along news of the Atlanta show about three weeks ago. It will mark the first show for the promotion inside the “Peach State” in more than a decade.

UFC 11: “The Proving Ground” (September 1996) and UFC 13: “The Ultimate Force” (May 1997) were the only two shows ever held in Georgia, which took place at the Augusta Civic Center in Augusta.

UFC Quick Quote: Dana White on UFC 85: ‘Cursed’

ufc 85

“I’m wondering if this kid [Thiago Alves] should be at 170 or not. If this were a title fight, I’d be really pissed. What are you going to do? Matt Hughes agreed to fight him at 175, so it’s not all bad. … I can’t wait to get this card behind me, to be honest with you. Eight guys dropped out. The main event guy can’t make weight. It’s crazy.”

– UFC President Dana White shares his thoughts via Yahoo!Sports.com on the fiasco also known as UFC 85: “Bedlam” at the O2 Arena in London, England, on Saturday, June 7. The latest blow was Thiago Alves coming in four pounds heavy four his main event fight with Matt Hughes. For what it’s worth Hughes proves once again that he is such a team player, agreeing to take the fight with Alves at a catchweight with little to no resistance. In addition, the UFC has really demonstrated its superior depth by cobbling together a card that is still ripe with talent. I’m still interested regardless of all the shenanigans.

UFC 85 weigh-in results for ‘Bedlam’ PPV event in London; Thiago Alves misses weight

ufc 85 weigh-in
The official weigh-in results for UFC 85: “Bedlam” at the O2 Arena in London, England, are in.

And there’s some ridiculous news to report.

Thiago Alves came in super heavy at 174 pounds for his main event fight against Matt Hughes. He will not have to shed the extra poundage — he and Hughes have agreed to fight at a catchweight.

He’ll more than likely have to pay Hughes a percentage of his salary for the massive blunder and pay in the court of public opinion for the lack of professionalism.

Here are the official results:

170 lbs.: Matt Hughes (170) vs. Thiago Alves (174)
185 lbs.: Michael Bisping (184) vs. Jason Day (184)
185 lbs.: Nate Marquardt (185) vs. Thales Leites (185)
170 lbs.: Mike Swick (170) vs. Marcus Davis (170)
265 lbs.: Brandon Vera (228) vs. Fabricio Werdum (247)
185 lbs.: Martin Kampmann (186) vs. Jorge Rivera (185)
155 lbs.: Thiago Tavares (154.5) vs. Matt Wiman (155)
170 lbs.: Roan Carneiro (171) vs. Kevin Burns (170)
205 lbs.: Jason Lambert (205) vs. Luis Arthur Cane (204)
170 lbs.: Jess Liaudin (169) vs. Paul Taylor (169)
265 lbs.: Eddie Sanchez (244) vs. Antoni Hardonk (247)

*Note: Fighters are allowed to weigh one pound more than the division limit in non-title fights.

Remember that MMAmania.com will also provide LIVE round-by-round, blow-by-blow coverage of the main card action on fight afternoon, which is slated to air at 3 p.m. ET on pay-per-view (PPV) from the O2 Arena on Saturday, June 7.

Of course, the latest quick updates of the prelim bouts will begin to flow earlier than that at around 1:30 p.m. ET.

It’s going to be an entertaining afternoon of mixed martial arts action … check us out for all the pre, during and post-fight coverage you can handle.

Note that the UFC 85 PPV will re-air at 10 p.m. ET.

This is gonna hurt: UFC serves Tito Ortiz with cease and desist for new book

this is gonna hurtThe long arm of Zuffa law apparently extends to estranged former champions who write books and wear their belts on the covers.

Tito Ortiz — who just satisfied the final fight on his contract with the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) — has been served with a cease and desist because his recently released autobiography, “This is Gonna Hurt,” violates the intellectual property rights of the mixed martial arts promotion, according to MMAPayout.com.

“The Huntington Beach Bad Boy,” according to the report, needed to get the stamp of approval from the UFC to sport the belt on the cover of the book. And he apparently did not get the green light or overlooked the clause in his contract.

Regardless, the move is just the latest salvo in an ongoing feud between the fighter an organization. Ortiz and UFC President Dana White have an epic, long-running distaste for one another.

This is certainly not going to help the situation.

Ortiz will soon be a free agent and has expressed his intentions of seeking greener pastures (literally) with an organization that can promote him properly, as well as be respectful and professional.

Even if he does it appears that Ortiz can’t break free from the UFC’s Kung Fu grip … for now.

He defeated Wanderlei Silva via unanimous decision to earn the vacant light heavyweight title at UFC 25: “Ultimate Japan 3″ back in 2000. Ortiz defended the 205-pound belt five times during a three-year span until he lost it to Randy Couture via unanimous decision at UFC 44: “Undisputed” in 2003.

Xtreme weekend: Randy Couture opens Xtreme Couture gym in Toronto

Xtreme Couture Canada

Former UFC champion Randy Couture ventured north of the border to Toronto this past weekend to promote the opening of the seventh installment of his namesake gym, Xtreme Couture, and the first of its kind in Canada.

Xtreme Couture in Toronto is massive — 33,000 sq. ft. and boasts a full health club, yoga and spinning rooms, sauna, steam rooms, as well as an enormous mat area, ring and cage.

Owner’s Doug and Robert Urch — along with Len MacDearmid — have designed a twist on the typical mixed martial arts training facility, bringing in a full health club to appeal to a much broader clientele. Hardcore MMA practitioners, however, can still get top-notch instruction from the likes of Mark Bocek, Chris Horodecki and Mark Hominick.

Couture was on double duty during his trip to Canada. He was also up for Yahoo! Canada’s Round 5 launch party. He was joined by former lightweight champion Sean Sherk, who was fresh off his loss to BJ Penn at UFC 84: “Ill Will.”

Round 5 has produced Series 1 of its action figures with the release of Quinton Jackson, Tito Ortiz, Matt Hughes and Randy Couture all being molded into composite collectibles. “The Muscle Shark” was on hand as he will have his own toy to open soon with the proposed fall release of Series 2 along with the likes of Rich Franklin and Anderson Silva.

Round 5 was at a loss as to who would fill the final spot on the Series 2 roster and had Randy and Sean square off in an arm wrestling match with the winner getting their pick as the fourth personality to be released in the fall. Sherk had in mind either Forrest Griffin or Wanderlei Silva and Randy was dead set on seeing “The Prodigy” in toy boxes across North America.

Sean put up a fight, but BJ will be able to re-enact crisp jabs into Sherk’s face until his heart is content come the fall.

Randy and Sean were both generous with their time and I had a chance to catch up with both of them. Randy talked about the fight with Fedor, his dedication to seeing fighter’s rights and working environment improved. Sean, on the other hand, discussed his fight with BJ and his thoughts on the Kenny Florian and Roger Huerta showdown scheduled for UFC 87.
